GM's going into semis

Greenwell bogies last 2 holes, Myers pars and we have a tie going into the Semis tomorrow!

Rd 6 is over and Val has a fairly comfortable lead

Going into the semis Val has a 7 stroke lead over Des, 17 over Birgitta and 27 over Liz Lopez. Lucky 7's.

Hole 18 - Jopsh leads by one over Avery.

Should be routine 3s unless Avery gambles on a big crush. He has reached it in practice. You can barely see the yellow flag to the right of big tree. Pin is about 10 meters from road and 40 ft past tree. Routine 3s around. Josh goes into the semifinals with a one shot lead over Avery and two over Matt. We'll have to see if someone from the second card jumps past Dave for the semis lead card.

hole 17

Hole 17 683' nasty pin placement on slope with OB road to left and right about 20 feet. Avery took a 6 yesterday with an OB on his roller drive and his sidearm upshot. All four drives are safe. Avery went with a sidearm today. The other three threw rollers. Dave is even with the big tree on left in the middle. The others are 60-100 ft short of big tree in the middle.

Avery upshot parked, gets 3. Matt sidearm approach within 5, gets 3. Josh's upshot is 50 ft short. His putt skips off the basket but doesn't roll OB, gets 4. Feldberg's upshot goes OB on left by the pin. He misses the uphill putt under 20 ft and takes a 5.

hole 16- Josh in front by 2

Hole 16 528' slightly longer version of hole 11 but with tighter OB road danger on right. Basket is about 100 feet past the end of the fence line and left maybe 30 feet. Ground is more level around the basket area than the slope you see near the corner of the fence.
Avery goes OB over the fence near the corner. Makes good upshot, gets circle 4. Matty O drives 70 right of pin, makes this huge putt for bird. Feldberg above basket about 100 ft short. Makes upshot, gets 3. Josh makes great 50 foot attempt for bird but it spits and he takes 3.

Hole 15 396' thread big space between two big trees with very slight turnover

Anthon takes the lead by 1 as Avery misses inside 20.
Josh with a park job 2. Matt just 10 ft away for a 2. Avery hits basket and misses again from about 20. Dave was 50 ft short but makes it for a 2.

Hole 14 339' downhill birdie opp with righty hyzer over park road

Should be birdie chances for players at this level, especially righties. For weaker arms, they might have to go directly at the pin under the big branch. Pin is about 60 feet past tree. Josh and Matt birdie so we're tied again with Josh and Avery at -50.

Hole 13 711' wide open 'driving range' hole

Pin isn't really close to road on right or behind it. This faces west so wind can definitely turn righty shots over toward the road. With these players, should be routine 3s. But Feldberg catches some "lettuce" on the tree to the left, leaves upshot 60 short and misses putt for the only 4.

hole 12- Avery back on top by 1

Hole 12 375' very narrow landing area with OB road left and wooded cliff right. You can see the yellow flag just to the right of the tall street pole. A safe 3 comes from laying up with easier upshot to pin. But these are World Class players. All four go for it. Avery and matt park it for 2s. Dave is in the schule about 50 ft away, misses putt takes 3. Josh 60 ft away, misses takes 3.

hole 11

Avery, Josh and Matt 3, Dave 4.

Hole 11 492' fence along left opens into field with pin to left. The fence surrounds a nature area and is OB. The road curves to the left just behind the big tree on the right which is almost pin high and 100 feet to the right of the basket. Pin is about 70 feet beyond end of fence and 40 feet left.

Why did the players cross the road? To get to hole 11. The last 8 holes are in the wide open but with several OB hazards on the fairway boundaries

hole 10 - tied again

Hole 10 324' across slightly crowned open field with cliff behind and right. Josh came up short 90 ft gets 3. Matt 60 past misses put gets 3. Dave 15 ft right makes 2. Avery cans 25 footer for bird. It's tied up again.

hole 9 - Josh Anthon has taken the lead

He birdies, Avery and Matt par, Dave birdies.

This is about as routine for righties as it gets. The pin is in line with the second car from the left. The main risk is clipping a left side branch on the big tree on the right coming thru the gap.

hole 8 - ties it up - Avery and Josh at -47

4 in front of Matt and 5 in front of Dave.

Hole 8 384' Slight turnover or roller with trouble left. Nikko is throwing a roller that landed about 45 feet right. A roller has to be just right or it can drop off the cliff that starts right at the tree line on the left. Pin is in-between the two big trees in the fairway.

FYI - pictures are from yesterday's round.

Matt, Dave and Josh all threw rollers with Matty parked. Dave made his 40 footer and Josh a 30 footer. Avery threw airshot and missed his 45 footer for bird.

Open Women

Val has a 5 stroke lead over Des now after 5 holes

After 7

Josh is within 1 of Avery after 7 holes. Matt 5 back and Dave 6 back.

hole 7

The tunnel is the last dark opening to the right in the photo. it's a very awkward angle from the sidehill tee. Players can go big hyzer and crash the trees into the tunnel, there's a back door window going long and straight or Josh threw an S flex yesterday that barely skimmed over the crest of the hillside

hole 6

Players can and do get into trouble left or right if they are slightly off on powerful turnovers. Many try to lay-up to the opening at 280 or so.

Those who lay-up may lose the turn on their disc and hyzer out into the shule on the left and have to throw over the ridge back to fairway like Nikko yesterday.

All but Dave layed up nicely to the opening, had good upshots and threes. Dave hit early tree kicking left. Hit another tree on approach and couldn't save the three.

Hole 5 186' sharp uphill with three routes

The most open route for righties is to throw a high turnover to the left of the two "goal post" trees halfway up the fairway.

hole 4

One of the good routes is to get on that far left side of the tee and throw an S flex just barely missing the 6" tree in the middle of the frame. The trapezoid tee pads on this course are wider at the front than the back, apparently to provide more angles off the tee.

hole 4

Hole 4 297' sweeping downhill left curve thru tall trees. The better routes on this hole aren't obvious since straight ahead is not one of them. Look at Nikko's foot on the far left corner of the pad.

Hole 3

Hole 3 234' gradual uphill turnover along rocky cliff face

Hole 2

Hole 2 330' downhill tunnel shot with hole a little deeper than where players can see it from the tee.

Horn blows for Rd 6

The horn sounds to start round 6 at Cliff Drive. Avery Jenkins leads Matt Orum and Josh Anthon by 3 with Feldberg one more behind.

Rd 5 update going into Rd 6 today

Avery's lead cut to 3 over Josh Anthon and Matt Orum, 4 over Feldberg for the lead card going into round 6 today. Matt Orum shoots a blistering 45 to shoot into a second place tie with Josh.

Liz keeps shooting better than her rating

Liz Shooner shot a 62 in here 2nd round. Let's have that hot round now girl.

After 9 holes

The lead open card is:

Avery Jenkins -27. Nate Doss -24, Paul Ulibarri -23 and Dave Feldberg -21

Matt moved down to 12th

and is tied with 8 others. Get 'em next round kid. Still a very good round. That 6 on 7 hurt really bad.

Hot rounds of 47

Nathan Doss and Paul Ulibarri shot the hot round of 47 at Rosedale Original (Top) to jump onto the leader card in Open A Pool. They both trail Avery Jenkins by 5 strokes.

Pro Women

Lead card has started for the Open Women. After 3 holes Des Reading has a 2 stroke lead over Birgitta Lagerholm and Nicole Frazer (we all know the Frazers, don't we?!) and a 4 stroke lead on Valerie Jenkins.

Matt finishes with a nice round

Matt had a nice round except for that one hole - #7. He finished 9 off the lead (Avery), 3 behind Coda and 2 back of Climo. Still a really nice round at the Worlds. Definitely proud of Matt. Keep it up big guy.

Matt's having a nice finish

He's deuced 3 of the last 4 holes, just getting a deuce on Hole 16. I don't know the course, but let's hope he can birdie out. He's currently 1 stroke behind Climo, 2 behind Hatfield and 8 back of Avery.

Matt's back in the saddle

Matt seems to have righted the ship after that 6 on hole 7. He just deuced hole 13 and he's 2 back of Climo in 4th right now. Don't know what the second card is doing but keep it up Matt. Avery is having another sweet round. He's 5 up on Coda, 6 on Climo and 8 on Matt.

yeah! just deuced 14 and Climo parred, 1 back of Climo.

Must be a backup on hole 10

Haven't seen any scores in a while now.

Avery's on fire though

He's -18 now, 5 stroke lead over Hatfield and Climo, 9 strokes on Matt after 9 holes. Matt came back with a bogie on 8 and a birdie on hole 9.

Ouch!

Matt struggled on hole 7 and took a 6. Get back on there Matt.

Correction - Matt gets to play with Avery, Coda and...

12X World Champ Ken Climo. - Go get 'em Matt.

Latitude 64 Discs are in

We've got some more Latitude 64 discs in now: they are in the OPTO plastic line which is like Innova's Champion and Discraft's Z. the discs we got in are:

Striker, Vision and Trident. The Striker and Vision are stable distance drivers, with the Trident being an overstable driver along the lines of the Flick, Firebird or Max.

VISION
Developed to suit beginners and amateurs. It has an understable flightpath and a good glide. The Opto Line plastic makes it reliable and durable under all circumstances. It can also be used as a roller by more advanced players. This is the driver of choice for players who throw up to 350ft.

STRIKER
Striker is the perfect disc for accurate drives; both straight, right and left. The excellent balance of our new driver makes it suitable for most players. Control is the key word for this disc! The flight at a 330ft drive is neutral with a very small fade at the end of the flightpath. The disc is rated at +0,5.
TRIDENT
Trident is an overstable control driver good for windy days and those safe hyzer shots. It´s not the fastest driver out there but with excellent control and a reliable flightpath this is a disc that will earn a slot in many bags. With a good power drive it will turn at first but always hyzer back, reliable and controllable to sum it up.
Recommended for advanced players.

These disc are a little more expensive as they are imported from Sweden to the U.S. and we couldn't purchase a lot of them at one time. We need to see how these will sell. The Vision and Striker have gotten good reviews from disc golfers thusfar.

Early Results - Day 1

And they are early. Not all results are in but you can check them out here and it updates as new scores come in.

Pro Worlds Results

Am Worlds Results

Haven't seen Matt's scores come up yet but Liz is in and she shot a 77 and is in 12th in the Open Women's division. Got that first round out of the way and now on up the ladder Liz!

Innova Dominates in Field Events

From Innova's website:

Innova dominates at Field events. Worlds field events are a fun way to kick off the World Championships. EDGE, Putting, Mini Golf, and Distance. Innova swept them all. Putting was won YETI again by Jay Reading. Also winning their divisions, were Valarie Jenkins, David Wiggins Jr., Nicholas Duran, Lavone Wolfe, and Kathy Hardyman.

Distance had Innova in the top four spots in Open. Manabu Kajiyama Manabu Kajiyama traveled the farthest and threw the farthest, 577 feet. Markus Källström got 2nd, Avery Jenkins got 3rd, and Mike Schweiger was 4th. Also winning their division: Des Reading, Jim Myers, David Wiggins Jr., and Nicholas Duran.

EDGE Skillshot shows a mastery of a wide variety of shots from putts to drives. David Greenwell won Open, a few points ahead of Chris Sprague in 2nd. Carrie Berlogar won womens, and David Wiggins Jr. won among the Am men.

Mini Golf is always a fun battle, and Ken Climo battled Steve Rico, the hands on favorite in mini golf for the tie in Pro Men. Gregg Hosfeld, the Miniac, won in Senior men. Now it's time for the real battles to begin! Good luck to all!

2009 KC World Championships

Here's a preview of some of the activity at the 2009 World Championships in KC:

Jeff Eades with a nice finish at the Wildcat

Disc 'n Dat team member, Jeff Eades shot a 98 to finish in 7th, but it was a lot closer than what it sounds. He was only 3 strokes off the 1st place score. Brad Schick and Rusty Ortman tied with a 95 and Brad won the playoff. Then there were 2 players each tied at 96 and 97. Boy, that was a really tight tournament for the Open players. Jim Toll of Flywear Apparel, who does the club and Disc 'n Dat shirts came in 3rd in the Advanced Masters division.

First World Champs are in from Kansas City

From the PDGA Website:

By PDGADirector Jul 25, 2009

The first world champions of the 2009 PDGA Disc Golf World Championships were crowned today as the Mixed Doubles and Junior Divisional Doubles competitions were contested.
Mixed Doubles kicked off this morning at 9:00am at Swope Park with 18 holes of best shot followed by 18 holes of alternating shot. David Feldberg and Melody King jumped out to an early one throw lead following the best shot format in round one over Eric McCabe and Liz Lopez. The two groups played hard all round and it came down to the final hole with Feldberg/King leading by one. Feldberg drove first on the hole but caught an early tree which left the pair with a sizable second shot not far from the tee pad. Melody King followed up with a great second shot which would give Feldberg the opportunity to attempt a 45 footer for the win. The putt missed just left and it looked like Melody King would hit the easy 10 foot come back to put them into a playoff with McCabe/Lopez who made a fairly routine three on the hole. Melody King stepped up and hit chains nearly dead center with her putt but it kicked out in front of an astonished crowd of onlookers who could not believe what they had just witnessed. Feldberg/King take a five on the hole and Eric McCabe and Liz Lopez are your mixed doubles world champions. McCabe and Lopez have both made their presence felt on the pro tour over the past two years with excellent play so look for them on the leader board when the singles competition begins later this week.

Each round everyone is re-seeded based on total strokes for the day. Everyone gets a chance to win some $$. Also, everyone will be entered in a drawing to win a 2008 Flying Pig Open Full Color Buzzz.
Thanks to Brad for what he's doing with the Pig. Always a great tournament - scheduled for Oct. 17-18, 2009 this year. More info to come.

Course Description: Nice combination of righty/lefty holes and some of the holes will be really nice looking (the course plays through the front of campus which is beautiful most seasons of the year.) Theres a nice amount of elevation change, up and down. The buildings are open most of the time, even on the weekends, so there will be access to restrooms and vending machines. The first holes tee is located in the parking lot just up the hill from the main entrance. On weekends the gates are up and parking will be great. On school days parking is available along Central Parkway (if you're lucky enough) and for $2 in the college's parking garages. Some of the holes use existing parking lots; sidewalks etc. for tee pads, the rest will be grass/dirt temporarily. Signage should be up by spring, tee pads and benches some time next summer. The course map will also display the major trees on the course along with their genus and species, so you'll get a little course in dendrology when you play the course. The course has little to no brushy/weedy areas, so there won't be much chance of losing discs. Should be a nice lunch course, a good place for students to play and pick up the game, a good place for some practice rounds in our Intro to Disc Golf course, and a good course to compliment Burnett Woods for someone looking to get a couple of short rounds in at different locations

Liz Shooner & Matt Blakely at 2009 Pro Worlds

Disc 'n Dat Team members Liz and Matt will be competing in the Open Women's and Open Men's divisions next week in Kansas City, Missouri. They left yesterday to get out there and practice some of the courses.

Here's a link to the Worlds website. It is a combined Pro/Am Worlds this year and I do believe we have some locals playing in the Am Divisions - Dave Hollingshead and Alex Hollingshead. I also know the Fellows from Dayton area are going to be participating - Jim and Nate. If you know of any other locals who will be at the Worlds let us know. We'd like to follow them and give you updates on here.

Jeff Eades at the Wildcat Hollow Open

Jeff Eades, Disc 'n Dat team member, will be at the Wildcat Hollow Open -A PDGA Pro C-Tier/Am B-Tier Event -Saturday July 25, 2009. He'll probably be competing in Open as they didn't have any Masters or Grandmasters signed up prior to the event. But we all know Jeff is very capable of bringing home First Place in Open anyway. He came in second there last year I believe. I'll post how he did as soon as I have information. I only hope they aren't getting as much rain as we are today.
Pike Lake Disc Golf Course sits in the hills and woods 7 miles from Bainbridge, Ohio at Pike Like State Park. The longest hole is #12 at 420 feet. This is an 18 hole course designed by Marc Queen. Pike Lake is rated as the most scenic course and the best overall course.
This is one of my favorite courses - it is a very fun and challenging course and is just beautiful. My wife and I go up there a couple of times a year usually and stay in one of the cabins - these are really nice and at a good price too. We play disc golf, hike the trails, lay by the lake, read, just a great getaway. There's plenty to do for the kids as they have paddle boats, canoes, a beach at the lake. I would definitely encourage you to play this course and if you get a chance just spend the weekend there. Beautiful country.

Been gone for a while

I just want to say I'm sorry for not having anything posted in more than a month. First I was getting ready for our vacation, then went on vacation and then had to take care of all the things that went on while I was on vacation. But... the vacation was wonderful and I needed it.

I'm back on the blog and hopefully will have some disc golf stuff as well as other tidbits that will spark your interest. Wow, what a crappy day outside here - raining pretty good right now and has been most of the morning.
