Time to get your GROOVE on!

Grooves have been ordered. Innova releases them on Monday and will ship at that time. Quantities have been limited to all vendors so get them while you can. We have them at $16.95 now if you pre-order. If you wait till they come in, they'll be $18.95. These are the "highly collectible" First Run Star-Stamped Champion Grooves. The Star Stamp designates these as First Runs.
The Champion Groove is Innova's newest Speed 13 Driver. The Groove features an innovative groove on the underside of the rim. This channel allows this speed 13 driver to be molded in lighter weights than our other wide rim high speed drivers. The Groove offers super fast, long, and straight flights. It can be thrown low or high and sidearm or backhand. If the Boss proved to be too much disc for you, get into the Groove.
Weight range: 165 to 175 grams. Ratings: 13, 6, -2, 2

Pics from the CCS Awards '08

It took me a long time to get these up anywhere but here they are; http://www.flickr.com/photos/danandcandy/sets/72157612789104763/

These are the pics from the GCFDA Course Challenge Series Awards at Willie's in Independence.
Pictured are the division winners. Want to know more about the Course Challenge Series? Check it out on cincinnatidiscgolf.com or just ask and I'll answer any questions you have. It's a great time and good place to learn more about the game and participate in some competition.

Mulligans

Since we're using mulligans in our Icebowls, I thought I'd share this little story about Jim:

Jim was teeing off from the long tee. Just after he released his disc he realized that his wife was about to tee off from the short tees, directly in his path. Unable to stop his swing, he hit Sue directly in the temple, killing her instantly.
A few days later Jim received a call from the coroner concerning her autopsy.
"Jim, Sue seems to have died from blunt force trauma to the head. Is it correct you threw a disc and struck her in the temple?"
Jim replied, "that's correct. It was an accident."
"I also found a large bruise on her right hip. Do you know anything about that?"
"Oh yeah," Jim said, "that was my mulligan."

Oh, what a feeling!

Those who have had one, know the feeling and this, to me does a good job of bringing that feeling to life for me. I can just feel it - Ace baby!

Course Ratings

I thought this might be some good stuff. Chuck Kennedy posted this on the PDGA Message Board and it contains a link to course ratings, which you can search for your favorite course and see what the rating is and how you stack up. Hope you enjoy it.

"The course rating is calculated separately for each round and the numbers are usually close from round to round under the same conditions. However, there's some statistical fluctuation so what we do is use all of the scores from all rounds on the same layout to calculate the SSA so the official round ratings will be the same for the same score in all rounds on that layout in the event. You can look at the course history online to see the SSAs and determine a typical SSA for a layout. So yes, you can provide a guide for what rating a score is likely to get under normal weather conditions. Here's the link: www.pdga.com/course-ratings-by-course "

My favorite discs

Just thought I'd throw out a few of my favorite discs: Champion Roadrunner - this disc is a great multipurpose driver, as it will go straight, left or right and long. Not a good wind disc, but in calmer conditions this is one of my go-to discs. The stamp on mine is almost gone. I use this on a lot of holes at Idlewild.

The STAR Destroyer is currently my distance driver for right to left, in mild winds and just pure distance.

The Comet is definitely my all purpose mid to long range do everything disc. I can throw it straight, left, right and even makes a good roller for me. I'd be lost without a Comet in my bag. The one I have is one from the very early runs, actually tie-dye, even thought it doesn't look like it.

Ok, I'll end it there. I may talk about a few of the other discs in my bag at some point. Please feel free to comment on my discs or throw some of your favorites out there and what you use them for.

Couple of Reminders for play this week

Bottom-Stamped STAR Destroyers

Yes, now you can get one of your favorite discs with no stamp on the top of the disc, but carries the stamp on the bottom:
STAR Destroyer The super popular Star Destroyer is now available in Innova's Bottom Stamp collection. The Destroyer is a very fast stable long distance driver. This disc is much like a faster Wraith, but with a little more high and low speed stability. Great disc for sidearm throwers and those with lots of power. Can handle headwinds and throws with off axis torque. Not suggested for beginning players. (but I see a lot of them throwing it)

PDGA Ratings Updates

Ok, I know many of you are interested in your ratings, other players' ratings, how much your rating went up or down and just in general are really ratings ranters. Well, here's a chance to see the schedule for the upcoming PDGA Ratings Updates for 2009, as posted by Chuck Kennedy on the PDGA Discussion Board:

"Here's the schedule we've worked out for Ratings Updates for 2009 events. We expect to see more than 1000 events this year so we've added two more full updates to the five per year we've been doing for quite a while. TD reports are due by the Thursday 12 days before these dates in order to make the update."

March 17 (includes Memorial)

May 19 (includes BG Ams)

July 14 (includes Am Nats)

Sept 1 (includes Worlds)

Oct 20 (includes Euro, Masters, USWDGC, USDGC)

Dec 15 (includes Players Cup)

Jan 26 (yearend final)

There will be a January 27th update this year and that is when you should see the 2008 Flying Pig results. They've got more results dates scheduled this year than in the past, so this should allow for more up-to-date ratings information. The one thing that does affect this is that TD's need to send their reports and payments in to the PDGA in a timely manner. This has been getting better over the years, especially with the ability to send in the reports and payments over the internet.

One thing I would like to remind players is that most TD's are volunteers and there is probably a lot more that they do and have to do that most of us never see and I do believe that most of them are doing their best to put on the best tournament they can and also to do everything they need to do in a timely manner. The fact is that sometimes things do happen that delay some of what TD's do. It may be personal issues, it may be simply forgetting, it may be they weren't completely aware of all that needed to be done as they just took over the TD job for that tournament to keep it going as it has for years. Sometimes people step up to do something like TD a tournament and it winds up being more than they thought it would or they don't have as much help as is needed. I could go on but I know people don't want to hear excuses - they want to see results. So, if you don't see the results you want, try respectfully talking to people in person about what you would like to see. I do think that once PDGA tournaments get to be more sponsored events and are more meaningful to those who may profit from them, then you will see more organized and efficiently run tournaments, including results and ratings being posted more frequently.

Now, I am not saying anything about any TD or tournament. I'm just stating my personal thoughts on the matter and about this topic in general.

Disc Golf Everywhere

I found this very interesting and wanted to share it with you: the following is a post from pdga.com message board

"DisCovery - A Recreational Gateway To Wellness", conceived earlier this year by Kira Coopersmith and Dan Doyle, uses the sport of Disc Golf as a therapeutic tool in a variety of settings.Beginning in late October, Budd MacKenzie, the founder of an organization called "Trust in Education", will be introducing the sport of Disc Golf on an experimental basis to a few schools and villages near Kabul, Afghanistan. From their website: "Trust in Education (TIE) is a grass roots, non-profit organization founded in May 2003 to provide health care, education and economic development programs in Afghanistan. An equal amount of time is devoted to educating Americans about our involvement in Afghanistan, past, present and future. TIE connects American communities and Afghan villages. Through these exchanges everyone discovers that we share more in common than not and experience the joy of making a substantial and long lasting difference in the lives of thousands."Kira Coopersmith reached Budd through a referral from Khaled Hosseini, the subject of the widely acclaimed book and movie entitled "The Kite Runner". Budd loves the idea of introducing Disc Golf to the Afghanis, especially schoolboys, because his hope is that introducing some much-needed fun into their lives will help make education more fun. "Education is the long-term solution to everything and they love to learn", according to Budd. Note in the prior paragraph I made reference to "schoolboys". Budd, Kira, and I would LOVE to expose Afghan girls to the sport as well. However, at the present time the situation in Afghanistan is such that it would be extremely problematic (and potentially overly controversial and dangerous) to attempt to expose our sport to girls, who are schooled behind large walls. Harold Duvall of Innova is working closely with Kira and I in this project and is very supportive of the project. Thanks Harold!!The grant that Kira and I received earlier this year from the PDGA has also been instrumental in allowing us to put this project together. Budd, Kira, and I are very excited to see this project come together. If Budd's first attempts to introduce the sport are successful we hope to see the project grow over time. Perhaps on the next trip over there in the Spring of 2009 Kira will accompany Budd."

Anyone that would like more information on "Trust in Education" is encouraged to visit their website at: trustineducation.org - there's really a lot of good stuff on here. Hope you enjoy it.

Expand your horizons - new Discraft discs!

Several new discs from Discraft are hitting the shelves this week:
Z Force, Z Avenger SS, Z Surge SS, Z Comet and ESP Zone Putter/Midrange. They will be in the store on Thursday 1/15/09
The new year brings new models and a new look for the Discraft Z line. The Discraft Z plastic has a new logo and disc stamp, so it is much more pleasing to the eye, imho. Many of you have wanted the Comet in Z plastic without being the Limited Editions - so now you've got it. Also, you wanted the Zone Putter/Midrange disc in more durable plastic - bingo! And I know many of you were looking for the Force, Avenger SS and Surge SS in Z plastic. Well, wait no longer. Some people just prefer Z plastic over ESP - and vice versa.

Icebowl Krazy Series #1 at Mt. Airy

(You can click on the picture to the right to enlarge it - and yes, Chucky did get in the pic)
Well, we got off to a pretty good start with the Icebowl Krazy Series at Mt. Airy on Saturday. I think the weather initially kept a few people away, as it was really raining hard in some areas early in the morning. However, the day turned out to be one of the best for playing disc golf - the rain stopped just as we started our round in the morning and didn't rain any more the rest of the day. The temperatures were really nice too. It was a little cool in the beginning taking signups but warmed up and I didn't wear any gloves the whole two rounds. I like that for an Icebowl! Even though it had rained a fair amount in the morning, the course wasn't too awful bad.
Dave Hammers, CEO of Fairhaven Rescue Mission came by with some cookies for all of us and gave a little talk about Fairhaven, it's mission and needs. He's very appreciative of our support and the efforts of the Icebowl pariticipants. I know a few of them got to talk to him for awhile.
Adam Jones stopped by and took some pics that are posted on the Cincinnntidiscgolf.com website. I also have an attachment with results, etc. in the Icebowl Forum on the club site.
We have raised $515 thusfar and that does not include some pledges and sales of the Fundraiser Discs.
If you were there and had a good time, leave a comment here for us. If you weren't there, I hope you were out getting some pledges and that we'll see you at Banklick for #2 on 1/24/09.
Thanks to everybody who came out.

Icebowl Krazy for Fairhaven

Ok, it's about 6:30 am and I'm getting ready for Icebowl Krazy #1 at Mt. Airy. No precipitation here right now it doesn't look like. Be careful if you're coming from north of the city. Sounds like it may be icy in some places. Hope to see you there. Let's raise some $ for Fairhaven Rescue Mission.

Getting ready for the Icebowl

Well, 12 of us got ready for the Icebowl on Wednesday evening out at Banklick. Boy, if it's like this on Saturday, we're going to be cold, have fun and the scores will be high! It was cold and very windy last night for the doubles at Banklick. Best score was -5 Drew Miller and Alman, with 3 other teams tied at -4. We played 18 holes, the old 18 minus old 12-13, plus the two bowl holes. We had a blast.
So for those who want to be ready for the Icebowl, here's some things to remember:
* dress in layers
* wear gloves - ones that you could even use throwing help if it is extremely cold. I wear my
Sealskinz Waterproof gloves
* wear warm socks, sockwarmers, toe warmers, etc. I wear a pair of liner socks, a pair of heavy
socks and then my Sealskinz Waterproof socks over those. Toasty!
* long johns are great
* handwarmers are really nice - I will have some for sale at the tourney
* a scarf, neckwarmer, something to cover your face
* eat a good breakfast and bring some snacks
I could have more but gotta run.

Icebowl on Saturday 1/10/09

Ok everybody. Just a few days before we tee off for the Icebowl Krazy Series. #1 in the Series is at Mt. Airy in Cincinnati. Signup by 9:30 tee-off at 10:00 a.m. I've had a couple people reserve some Rocs and Buzzz for the fundraiser. Again, I would get them while you can. We have had another anonymous donor of $1 per Icebowl participants in the series, up to 50 per Icebowl - thank you to the anonymous donor. Again, anyone wanting to donate anything or have a question about the Icebowl, call me at 859.371.3668 or e-mail me at discndat@fuse.net

Signups end at 9:30, but if you can try to get there prior to that it will help in things running smoothly.

5th Annual Texas' Women's Championship

Women, this looks like a pretty nice tourney to go to. From the PDGA.com website: "The 5th annual Texas Women’s Championship will be held April 18 and 19 in Round Rock Texas. The event is second only to the United States Women's Disc Golf Championship (USWDGC)in attendance, averaging just over 50 ladies each year. It is anticipated that the 2009 event will break the record for the largest ladies only disc golf event in the world.
The Texas Women's Championship has been sanctioned as a PDGA A-tier for the professional and advanced amateur divisions, while all other divisions will be held as a B-tier event. Past champions, include Des Reading, Courtney Peavy, and Mel Ring, who have all benefited over the years from the support of multiple sponsors including the Vibram Open and Revolution bags.
Each year the courses in Texas challenge the women and 2009 promises to be no different. The TD and staff of the 2009 Texas Women's Championship have over 20 years of experience that will ensure a memorable experience.
Ladies .... make your plans now to attend this event, enjoy some southern hospitality, and be a part of history!

When to get your Groove on?

I will be keeping you up-to-date on when to expect the Groove to be in stock. He said February 1st, but that can change - I know!

Getting your Groove on

From Dave Dunipace on the PDGA Discussion Board, about the new disc "Groove": "The Groove is a speed 13 driver with a big groove in the beveled edge to reduce weight. It is something like the Monarch, but more high speed stable and faster. It has a small high speed turn with a smaller overstability than a Boss or Destroyer. We are planning on releasing the first run around February 1. It will be about 4 to 6 thousand depending on how well molding goes. There might be a couple of weeks delay getting to the regular stock after that. The Champion will be a regular run disc when we can get it back in production. We haven't decided on the disposition of the Star yet."

And from another poster on the board: "Ok, I got to examine one of the test Grooves on New Years. It was Champion plastic, very similar feeling to the Monarch and not the glossy/rubbery Champion like the Boss. The Bottom looked like a streched out Monarch wing with the groove being wider and shallower.Kenny was raving about this disc. He described it as a super fast disc with an "old school" flight pattern. He said that it would hold the line it was released on, but get amazing forward penetration. He also said it did not have a ton of LSS a la the Destroyer/Boss. He said it will probably replace his Wraiths (blasphemy it seemed, but he said it). Unfortunately we were not at a course and it was dark, otherwise I would have taken it outside and threw it down the street. Kenny liked the Boss when it came out, but he thinks the Groove will be far more useful to him. Probably to most of us. I love the Boss and Monarch and I can't wait to get my groove on! "

Back and ready to fly!

I hope everyone had a very happy New Year. We're gearing up around here for the 2009 Icebowl Krazy Series, which kicks off this Saturday 1/10/09 at Mt. Airy in Cincinnati. Here's a link to the discussion about it on cincinnatidiscgolf.com In short, we have 3 Icebowls in January and February that are fundraiser events for Fairhaven Rescue Mission. Last year the Greater Cincinnati Flying Disc Association (GCFDA) raised $3100 for Fairhaven. This year we have a goal of $4500. To that end we have several ways to donate: for each player participating in the events, $5 of their entry fee goes to Fairhaven; also, we will be selling Mulligans (extra throws) at each event for $1 per mulligan, 3 per round - all of this goes to Fairhaven; we will have a Split-the-Pot CTP at each event with half of the money going to Fairhaven; many disc golfers are getting pledges for their participation in the Icebowls: they are getting a set donation, an amount per Icebowl, an amount per # of persons participating in the total events, $ per holes played, etc.; the GCFDA has pledged a donation of $1 per person who participates in the Icebowl Krazy Series. We are also collecting clothes and food donations at each event. Kevin Brashear and helpers will assist with collection. If you would like to help us make our goal of $4500 with a donation to Fairhaven Rescue Mission, you can bring your cash, check or money order to the event or you can send checks or money orders payable to Fairhaven Rescue Mission to:

Disc 'n Dat
159 Lloyd Ave.
Florence, Ky 41042

Disc 'n Dat also has Icebowl Fundraiser Discs for sale to raise money. The discs, pictured above, available are: Innova STAR Ontario INNcolor Rocs $30 each, with $19 going to Fairhaven; Discraft Supercolor Buzzz $22 each, with $12 going to Fairhaven. I would get them as soon as you can if you want them - I'm not sure if I will be able to get more or not. You can call me and reserve one if you wish for this Saturday at Mt. Airy.
Dave Hammers, CEO of Fairhaven Rescue Mission, will be at the Mt. Airy Icebowl this Saturday to help us kick off our fundraiser events.
