Just a reminder:

Bag tags look great and will look great on your bag. What number you gonna have? The bag tags are nice to sport on your bag that you support the Blugrass Open tourney and the GCFDA even if you don't play in the weekly events. We have a lot of disc golfers who get them and just play for the low tag among their friends. We'll have them available at the weekly bag tag at Mt. Airy, at Disc 'n Dat or see Ben Shooner or Nick. Thanks again to these guys for doing so much with the bag tags the last several years. See you tomorrow.

2009 Discraft Memorial Open March 5-7

This is one of the first big events of the year and gets national participation because it is one of the first big ones and people like to go to the warm weather of Arizona after the long winter months in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Maine or wherever. I know we've had several disc golfers from this area attend this one in the past. This year Jeff Eades is traveling out west to participate in his first PDGA Grandmasters tournament at the Memorial. Here's a link to the PDGA Message Board discussion about the tournament. It might give you a feel as to why people like it so much.

I'll be posting some updates next week about how Jeff's doing on here and maybe some other bits of news from the tournament.

What's the picture have to do with discs?

So, thusfar no ideas on what the car picture below has to do with the new discs being introduced by Innova next week. Hmmm...need a hint? One needs a driver, the other a putter - but both have the same name.

New Discs from Innova

Yep, you heard it right. Some new discs from Innova, well one new disc and one disc in a new plastic. The Pro Dart will be the newest disc from Innova, It's a putter made of new R-Pro (Rubber Pro). Very straight flyer. Like a slightly faster Aviar with less low speed fade. Built like a smaller Aero. Preliminary numbers are 3,4,0,0.

From Dave Dunipace on the PDGA Message Board: "We had been having difficulties molding the soft pro, soft. The softer it was, the more rejects we had. Recently, we developed a new R-Pro plastic that has solved this problem. We are going to be using it in JKs, Pro Rhynos, Pigs, Omega SS, and any other R-Pro type discs we make. This basically means these discs will be consistently softer. We are currently making two new additions with this plastic. Our newest disc, the Dart P&A and the R-Pro Aviar P&A are being made with this new plastic."

The Boss will now be released STAR plastic.

Both of these discs are due to be released by Innova on March 1st. We will have them some time next week.

So, does anyone know what the picture has to do with these discs?

Bag Taggin' is Cool

Bag Tags are back! Come join us on March 1st for the kickoff to another year of fun with numbers at Highland Hills. Each year numbered tags are sold in support of the Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open. The point is to attain the lowest number & rub it in to all your friends. Cost is $20 and first tee is at 9am. The opening tournament will consist of three rounds of nine holes with $10 going to payout & $10 going to the BGO. Tags are also available separate from the tourney for $10 each. You can get them at Disc 'n Dat or through Ben Shooner. After the time change weekly tag rounds will once again be held at Mt. Airy on Thursday nights. Rounds start at 6pm but all are welcome to attend "business meetings" at Northside Tavern at 5.
This year's tags are sponsored by FADE Gear. They stepped up to the plate and are really helping us out this year so we can have more of the Bag Tag money go to the tournament. Disc 'n Dat has FADE Gear disc golf bags at the shop and they have been selling really well since they came out last year. The great thing about them is that they add color to the bag world. If you want to add color to your game, this is where it's at. All bags carry a 1 year warranty. We have had no problems with any of their bags.
Flywear Apparel came up with the design for this year's tag and it represents the "Painted Ponies" trophies that we have given out the last few years. Everyone thusfar has really liked the design. Thanks to Jim Tolle and Flywear. Click on the pic to see an enlarged version.

Banklick Renamed Lincoln Ridge Park

Here's the story about Banklick Woods being renamed to Lincoln Ridge Park and a nice pic of local pro disc golfer, Dave Cox. This article was in the Sunday 2/15/09 Kentucky Enquirer. You can click on the pic to make it larger to read it.

Flying Disc Magazine is still flying!

Ok, the Flying Disc Magazine is still flying. It just isn't the official PDGA magazine. They have put out several issues rather quickly. Maybe they are starting to get the hang of it. It is a magazine that is not just about disc golf - it is about all disc sports, disc dogs, ultimate, guts and much more. They have some articles in it by Ken Climo, Dave Feldberg and Avery Jenkins. There's plenty of good stuff in there, like a history of disc golf by Jim Palmeri and a story on sandbagging by a former Cincinnati player, Frank Garcia, or for some who don't know he changed his name, it used to be Frank Spicer. Good stuff all in all. I haven't had a chance to read it all yet, but like what I saw. It is available here Flying Disc Magazine, March 2009 or in the store.

Groove now in regular production

The Innova Champion Groove is now in stock with the regular stamp. We've got weights from 166-175g - a little low on the heavies, but will have more by Thursday. Innova has put the ratings of the disc right on the stamp. Looks like that may be something new they are starting this year. I think a lot of people will like that. So, now that people have had a chance to throw the Groove, what do you think? Any reviews out there. Sure would like to hear from you. I only got to throw mine a couple of times in rough conditions before it dove into the running wild rapids of Idlewild during our Icebowl there. And I didn't get that one back.

Liz Shooner All-Star Finish at La Vie en Rose Tourney

Way to go Liz. Liz Shooner, local professional disc golfer and a very active member in the club and disc golf scene in this area, shot some very good rounds at the inaugural La Vie en Rose tournament in Florida this past weekend. She finished 5th, tied with current world champion Valarie Jenkins and 5-time world champion Juliana Korver. That's some pretty sweet company there girl. Looks like Liz is off to a great start to the year. Here's wishing her great finishes in all her tournaments this year. Let Liz know what you think of her when you see her. Oh well, I don't know if you want to say that, but just give her some congrats on her play in this tourney.

PDGA Logo "Shadow" Revealed

This comes from the most recent PDGA Newsletter. If you're not receiving the PDGA Newsletter that's because you haven't signed up to get it. Come on and sign up to receive the newsletter. It's the start of a new year, lots of tourneys coming up, a new disc golf magazine, the discgolfer will be unveiling soon. Lots of good stuff coming from the PDGA.

Legend from Michigan Provides the Silhouette

Thanks so much to all 84 PDGA members who responded to the PDGA Logo puzzle. No it was not Stork or Climo or Juliana or Rivers Sherrod or Johnny Sias or Barack Obama or Mike Randolph (which I mistakenly advised our World's DVD crew) or Stokely. Who fills the logo, lo-and-behold, is Ken Gill (# 3549) from Michigan. Clearly, the "old-schoolers" and the Michigan crew are well aware of this, as I heard from the likes of Javier Kowalski(#3178), Scott Martin (#5560), J. Gary Dropcho (#2734), Eric Vandenberg (#3089), Mike Politz (#34804), Drew Bray (#7408), Alan Urban (#36583), Zachary Vaughn (#24946), and Larry LaBond (#6903). Most enjoyable was hearing from the Gill family themselves, who provided some interesting background on the image. Brother Joe Gill (#3550), who was one of the first to respond noted that Ken was wearing his tasseled golf cletes in the picture, which was taken Kandahar Park in the Detroit area (a course that no longer exists). Also noteworthy is that Ken was putting with his old reliable...an 86 Softie using the follow-through that his wife, Marie, notes is now being followed by their 12 year old son, who proudly displays the logo on this bedroom door! The logo itself was the creation of past PDGA Board member, Kristi VandenBosch (#7867) originally from Ann Arbor, now in Santa Monica, who spearheaded publicity for the PDGA back then. Her work continues to provide the representation for our association and is a moniker that we are all proud of.

discgolfer on the Tee Pad

Looks like we have a new, or is that old magazine coming up:

Old PDGA Moniker Goes Modern for Membership

The new PDGA publication is discgolfer, a full-color glossy magazine that will be winding its way into members' mailboxes this spring. Edited by long-time publisher, Rick Rothstein, discgolfer reprises the name of the first PDGA newsletter that was created in 1987. It will be under the artistic direction of Kent Johnson, who collaborated with Rick for nearly 10 years at Disc Golf World News. Other staff members so far include Gregg Hosfeld, John Whinery, and Scott Papa. An editorial advisory board is also being formed to offer guidance and story suggestions, in addition to critiquing each issue. The discgolfer staff will be reaching out to PDGA members for stories and ideas, such as a photo essay featuring interesting dyed discs. Please send your high-res photos of your coolest dyed discs to stories@pdga.com. Maybe your disc will make the cut.

Alright, any locals going to send in some good photos? I'd like to see a local get in.

New Gateway Discs

Just wanted to let you know we have some of the new Gummy Clear Evolution Gateway discs in stock now: Wizard, Warrior and Blaze. These are really sharp looking and also very gummy! I like saying that - gummy! If you haven't tried a Gateway disc, now might be the time to try one. They may not be the top disc manufacturer in sales, but they have produced some really good discs that most people haven't given a chance. I have been putting with a Wizard now for going on 3 years and that sure coincides with my putting getting better, so as far as I'm concerned, that's enough for me. Gateway has several really nice putters: Wizard, Warlock, Magic, and Voodoo and they all come in a different variety of softness/hardness, so I'm sure they have one that will fit your needs. The putters have been where they have made the most inroads, but they do have some other good discs you might want to give a try: the Assassin is a good long straight driver, along the lines of a Teebird. The Sabre is good straight driver that many like - it just never fit the bill for me. Other good choices are the Blaze, Warrior, Element and Spirit. Many of their discs, especially the drivers have been overstable and have not been what beginners, amateurs and recreational players like, but the Element and the Warrior are really some good midranges you might want to try. Ok, just wanted to put some Gateway information out there. Any questions, let me know. If you've thrown some Gateway plastic, let me know what you think.

The time has come to get your GROOVE on!

Yes, they were just delivered 5 minutes ago. Come on and get your GROOVE on while we have the Star-Stamped first runs. We did get a good number of 165-169g ones so those who like lighter weight discs, we've got them. That's specifically why this disc was originally designed, with the groove in the rim, so it could be produced in the lighter weights. Hmmm, I'm ready to go throw one tonight at Banklick.

New Discraft Discs Review: Z Comet and Z Force - Reply Now and Enter to Win - click here to enter.

This is a review from http://www.1000rated.com/ - really nice reviews plus you get a chance to win. I think today is the last day to reply and enter to win, so do it now. This review was written by a Columbus disc golfer, Zac Biberstine, who tied for 3rd in the Open Division at the Banklick Icebowl. I hear he's only been playing for a short while, maybe a year and a half or less, not sure. Good reviews Zac.

Hex on the TeeRex?

So, is there a hex on the Innova TeeRex? Here's a little snippet from Dave Dunipace on the PDGA Message Board

"It is a complicated story starting with the original TeeRex. We had two tops originally and we didn't know one was bad. It was supposed to be a duplicate of the original. So there were some good and some not so good TeeRexes. I had another top made to fix the problem. It didn't, for some unknown reason. We used an X type bevel which helped, but wasn't entirely satisfactory either. These were the only real TeeRex X. We made a fourth top which fixed the problem. Some of these were referred to as Xes, but they weren't. They were just Xtra stable. We no longer use the X bevel, but we do use the enhanced top. In the future, we will use the enhanced stability method to make sure the TeeRexes don't turn over. The TeeRex has to have the most complicated short history of any disc we have ever produced. We are getting it right now. "
We don't sell a lot of TeeRexes but I thought those of you who do throw them would like to know this bit of information. If I hear anything else about them I'll post here.

GDS Discs

We'll be getting some new GDS discs in on Wednesday or Thursday too - should be some of the new Clear E stuff they have out that's supposed to be pretty nice. I'll update here when we get them in.

Icebowl Krazy Series Finale at Idlewild/Boone 2/7/09

Ok, we have just a few days before we crown the Champions of the Icebowl Krazy Series 2009. Several of the Divisions are up for grabs. I've posted the current Series totals at cincinnatidiscgolf.com message board - there's going to be some nice circular plaques (shown here) from Flywear for the Champions of each division. Thanks Flywear. If you click on the pic here, you can see a larger version.

We'll be playing one round at Idlewild at one round at Boone, then have the Awards over at Gold Star. Good times, so come on out. Any questions, let me know. Also, if anyone needs a particular disc, bag or whatever, let me know and I'll bring it along.

Gettin' the Groove on update

Pre-Orders are coming in at a pretty good rate. Only 2 more days till they are here. They should be in by 1:00 on Wednesday. Make sure you get yours early to get a good choice of weights and colors. Once again, the Groove is a Speed 13 Driver from Innova and can be molded in lighter weights. Will make a good long, straight driver. I'm looking forward to trying it out. Got the Icebowl coming up at Idlewild/Boone on Saturday so I'll get to try it out then.
