Ok, it's time for the finale. We have the 3rd in the Icebowl Krazy Series coming up Saturday at Lincoln Ridge/Banklick course in Independence, Ky.

This is a fundraiser for Fairhaven Rescue Mission and our goal is $2500. We are looking like we may be a little short. Hopefully, we will have a huge turnout or get some nice donations to help us reach our goal. As it looks, we're going to be about $400-500 short I believe.

The disc is blue with silver hotstamp, "1998 Edgewood Electric PDGA Disc Golf World Championships", weighs 178g and has his signature, his PDGA number 4297 and 9X on it that he signed.

1 new, never thrown golf disc signed by Juliana Bower, before she married. Yep, you got it right, this is probably one of the first Juliana (now Juliana Korver 5-time World Champion) signed discs, with many more to come.

Our locals are doing pretty well also. Matt Blakely is hanging in 15th place in Open; Jeff Eades is in 13th in Grandmasters and Liz Shooner is in 10th; these are all Disc 'n Dat sponsored players. John Finnegan is in 46th in Masters.

MD2 - Fiend: The MD2 is another 21.7 cm mid-range disc that will be very versatile to both the recreational golfer and the touring pro. Straight flying, stable, quick and accurate these discs will hold whatever line you put them on. Flight similar to a cross between Innova's Coyote and Mako. Tight and long fairway shots, medium range drives and really long approach shots are not a problem with this disc. Great feeling plus configuration rim for a smooth and controlled release every time. GM - Gremlin: Greater Midrange which is a unique driver. This disc falls between a mid range and fairway driver. With a speed between 5 and 6, glide of 5, turn of 0 and fade of 1. Who was the first professional athlete to give the middle finger to a photographer?

1886, Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn, opening day team portrait for the Boston Beaneaters. Yup, that's the first recorded "f— you photo," as relayed by NBC's Out of Bounds blog.

From Out of Bounds/NBC Sports: "It's a staple of high school graduation photos across our land; as American as the Fourth of July picnic, or Lady Gaga appearing in public in her underwear. Giving the finger on camera is a time-honored tradition, but until today I had no idea that the first person to do it may have been a pro baseball player. Here's Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn, a late-19th century pitcher for the Providence Grays and Boston Beaneaters who, among other things, holds the professional record of 59 wins in a season. They played baseball barehanded in those days, and players weren't above cheating, or trying to maim an opponent, in order to win. So flipping the bird during a team photo shoot was no big deal for Radbourn (see it following the jump). Circa opening day, 1886, it's believed to be the first time anyone's done that on camera.

The PDGA is introducing a new feature to their site: Rules School. I think this is a good feature and hope you will check it out. I'm putting the first paragraph of the first in the series - Interference - on here and then you can click the link if you'd like to read further - it really is pretty interesting and helpful for playing in tournaments. It clarifies some things for you.

Rules School is a new PDGA series to highlight and explain each section of the PDGA Rulebook. Interference 803.07 is the first installment. A recent event brought up some interesting issues pertaining to Interference. So this looked like a good topic to kick off the series. The format will be to reproduce a passage from the rulebook and then discuss its background and meaning along with some real world examples to illustrate the points.
Rule 803.07A: A thrown disc that hits another player, spectator, or animal shall be played where it comes to rest.
A moving disc contacts a living object that is unaware the disc is coming toward it or is unable to get out of the way fast enough. The disc is marked and played from where it lands after the deflection. The thrower does get an OB penalty if the deflection is unlucky and the disc ends up OB. This is no different from the randomness of a disc deflecting OB off a tree branch waving in the wind – 300 milliseconds later the disc might have missed the waving branch completely.

The Memorial Day 2 Summary

Open division tournament leader Barry Schultz, who shot a -11 at Fountain Hills in round one, sustained a hand injury and was forced to withdraw from the Memorial just prior to his 1:45pm scheduled tee time today. Barry showed great class and sportsmanship by showing up at the tee of hole one to wish card mates Paul McBeth, Devan Owens, and Nikko Locastro well before they teed off. The loss of Schultz to the lead card made 21 year old Nikko Locastro the oldest player in that group indicating that there is a youth movement in the upper echelon of the open pro division.

Paul McBeth (-16) carded a second round -6 to hold on to a two throw lead over Nikko Locastro (-14), who dropped a few throws on the last couple of holes to finish at -5 on the day. Devan Owens (-8) had a run of bad luck with quite a few bad breaks and a handful of bounce outs to finish at +2 for the round. Cale Leiviska (-13) and Dave Feldberg (-12) will join the lead group for round 3 at Fountain Hills on Friday after shooting -4 and -5 respectively. Steve Brinster shot -8 for the best round of the day which was rated at 1059.

In the Open Women’s division Liz Lopez (+13) shot a +4 on the day to move into second place behind Liz Carr (+10) who shot a +5 on day 2. Melody King (+12) and Des Reading (+13) continued to play consistently strong to put them in the lead group going to Fountain Hills on Friday.

Robert Ryan (-16) had the days hottest round in all divisions with a -9 to grab the lead in the Masters division to lead the Alabama duo of Dean Tannock (-13) and Tim Keith (-13) by three throws. Jim “no spin” Myers (-9) leads the Grandmasters by a whopping 8 throws over second place Harvey Brandt (-1). Dr Rick Voakes (-4) carded a -1 on the day to extend his lead to six throws over Snapper Pierson (+2).

The pro divisions will move back to Fountain Hills for round 3 on Friday afternoon. Look for scores there to falter if the expected winds come. Stay tuned to PDGA.com for complete coverage and online scoring of the pro lead group who tee off at 1:46pm at the Fountain course.

We will be playing 24 holes the first round, lower tees and the original 18 holes the second round, upper tees. We will try to move holes #1 and 13 for the second round.

The day's tourney prizes will be given out at the end of the tourney. After that we will convene at Buffalo Bob's Restaurant for the Course Challenge Series Awards. We're working on them as a sponsor so come on out and support them and us.

The current standings for the 2009 PDGA Players & Rookies of the Year have been updated. Seven men and seven women have the best Average Ratings in their seven best events for Player of the Year (POY) for events thru the USDGC. Six men and six women have the best Average Ratings in their five best events toward Rookie of the Year (ROY) thru the USDGC. The top 7 (POY) and top six (ROY) players with the best Average Ratings in their best events by yearend will make the finals before the final calculations determine the POY and ROY award winners for 2009. These players are on top so far. You can click on the above pic to see it better. Full details for each candidate and the calculation process have been posted here.

The Women rookies with Average Ratings in red do not yet have the minimum five events needed by the end of the year to qualify as finalists. So they need to play well in qualifying events the rest of the year to keep up with Haley Konrad who is technically in the lead right now. All of the other players in the four tables already have the minimum number of events needed. They can still improve their Average Rating if late season events are better than ones already included.
Almost three months of events have not yet been reported. Positions can still change within the top candidates. Other players just out of the top six or seven can still get in with many events to go. However, only events that are B-tier or higher where at least 54 holes are played can count toward the standings.
In addition to their Average Rating shown here, the finalists' Average Rating at Worlds and Finish Percentage (100% is best) in their best events are part of the final awards calculation. For POY only, Head-to-Head peformance against the other finalists will be included.

Just recently, Cliff Towne, keeper of the PDGA Course Directory, reported that he had registered the 3,000th disc golf course. This was particularly exciting because the course, which is the Schmitten Discgolf Parcours, is the first to be registered in Austria. To put this milestone into some perspective, do remember that the first permanent disc golf course in the world, at Oak Grove Park in Pasadena, California, was established by Ed Headrick and Wham-O in 1974. Disc golf had been played for a good many years at tournaments prior to 1974, but this was the first permanent installation. So… it’s been 35 years from the first to the 3,000th course. That may seem a long time to you, especially if you’re under twenty. But, if we take a look at our much older cousin, ball golf, we see an interesting comparison of development. The first mention of golf was way back in 1452 when King James (not of Cleveland... King James II of Scotland) banned the playing of golf because it was cutting into time spent on archery practice. So, we know the game was being played informally for many, many years before the Society of St. Andrews Golfers got it together to form the first club in 1754, which would later become the Royal and Ancient. It’s hard to find a good timeline of global ball golf course development, but we do know that the 3,000th course did not get built in the U.S. until 1916. So, it took the grand old game roughly 450 years from inception to 3,000 courses. Or, more realistically, 162 years from the first club to that point of development. Given that, our 35 years is pretty darn impressive. We got traction on this game very quickly. Now, do remember that ball golf has continued to grow and now boasts over 31,000 courses worldwide, with about 17,000 of them in the U.S. It’s also estimated that there are about 50 million ball golfers on the planet… and of course there’s been one on the moon.
But, back to our 3,000th course, which is special in several ways. For one, because it’s the first registered course in Austria, it’s emblematic of the global burst of interest that has hit disc golf.

Disc golf fans around the world, thanks to this year’s Internet TV production, witnessed a changing of the guard as the young gun Nikko Locastro overtook veteran Dave Feldberg and claimed the United States Disc Golf Championship with (-34).

Locastro, 21 years old, produced a bogey free round and ended with a 57 (-11), while the 5-time major champion Feldberg logged in a 62 (-6) and lost by two strokes.

During the awards ceremony following the round, Feldberg, who won the 2005 Open, commended Locastro on his first major tournament win.“Nikko Locastro now proved he is one of the top players of the world,” Feldberg said.

Until Saturday, Locastro’s biggest win was at The Memorial, a national tour event held earlier in March.“I’ve been looking for a big win to satisfy my hunger,” a delighted Locastro said after the round.

When asked if winning the Open was as sweet as he’d dreamed for so many years he said, “Yeah, It feels even better.”

Although the Missouri resident had respectable rounds on day one and two with a 62 and 61 respectively, it wasn’t until round three, when he shot a 58, that Locastro positioned himself within reach of Feldberg. And, when Locastro got his shot at the lead card he made the most of it.

He said in order to get into striking position he had to remain focused, play smart and “get aggressive when it was time to be aggressive.”

After leading the entire week, Feldberg could not stop the surging Locastro. He tied Feldberg after hole 7 when Feldberg failed to convert his birdie attempt. Then on the next hole, Feldberg’s drive hit a tree and went out of bounds, and later led to a bogey. Locastro, however, birdied the par four hole and took a two stroke lead.

Feldberg rallied and gained a stroke back on Locastro on hole 9 and then tied it after he eagled hole 10. Also on hole 10, Locastro’s initial drive went into the bunker, resulting in no penalty. On his second drive, he delivered a beauty that allowed him to eventually collect a birdie. Locastro then took the lead again after making a birdie on hole 11 and charged on, while Feldberg failed to make another rally.

Spectators were eating up the drama. Their numbers had swelled to at least 300 by the time the lead group arrived at hole 16. When Locastro, who placed 27th last year, nearly parked his drive the fans erupted in applause. Then as he walked down the fairway, an enthusiastic supporter yelled “Nikko!” to rally the player forward.

Crowd numbers were surely boosted by the fair weather. Yesterday forecasts had called for storms.Spectator, Kim Theesen, of Lincoln, Neb., was in Atlanta for the week and wanted to stop by and the see the Open for the first time.“These guys are really good,” Theesen said.
Droves of spectators world-wide also watched in anticipation. The tournament’s Internet TV production collected 7,700 viewers Saturday.

Although Feldberg was struggling to rally late, he did sink a big putt on hole 18 to claim sole ownership of 2nd place above Josh Anthon, who had a scorching round of 53 (-15). Anthon’s phenomenal round brought him to 3rd place and the course record.“Good luck trying to beat that new course record,” Anthon said during the award ceremony.

After the round Feldberg gave credit to Locastro for his solid play.“The kid earned it,” Feldberg said, adding that he commended Locastro for relentless practice in order to get to this point.
He said that after his disappointing performance he’s going to rededicate himself to tournament play.

As for Locastro, after the round he was soaking it all in. As he began signing the first of what would surely be dozens of autographs, he seemed on top of the world.“I’m honored and very satisfied,” said the 2009 Open champion, who also collects a $15,000 check.

Lots of action out there on the course today. Nikko Locastro shoots a 58(-10) and jumps up to a tie for 2nd with Nate Doss and Phil Arthur, all 3 behind Dave Feldberg.

Other hot rounds today were Cale Leviska and Avery Jenkins with 59.

Matt blakely shot a 63. He's gotten better each round. Unfortunately Matt often has a tough first round and then gets better. Keep it up Matt.

A Focused Feldberg Forges Four-throw Lead at USDGC

Under a warm sun and gentle winds, David Feldberg caught fire in his second round yesterday to extend his lead to a four-throw advantage at the 2009 United States Disc Golf Championship. Feldberg’s second-round 57 (1070-rated) was only bested by Josh Anthon, who carded a 56 and moved to within 8-throws of the lead. Thursday’s final foursome was completed by first-round co-leader Brian Schweberger, who threw a 63, Michael Johansen (second-round 62), and Joe Mela (second-round 64).
These scores in the low 60’s resulted in a major shuffle at the top of the leaderboard, three new players have now moved into the leadgroup to join Feldberg. 2009 masters division World Champion, Phil Arthur, continued his outstanding play this year with a second round 59 on the Winthrop Gold course. His 1058-rated round helped move Arthur into sole possession of second place. The 2008 USDGC titlest, Nate Doss, regained championship form on Thursday carding a 58, which moved him into a third-place tie with Finland’s Jussi Meresmaa.

Defending champion Garrett Gurthie nearly threw it a Texas mile during a Wednesday distance qualify session that blew away the scores from last year.
The 19-year-old, of Gainesville, Fla., chunked a handful of Innova Pro Destroyers over 600 feet. His best was recorded at 654, which was nearly 150 feet further than the throw that won it for him last year against Avery Jenkins. Jenkins, always a contender in the long throw, squeaked by and tied for sixth.
The top six of all who attempted at the Winthrop golf course moved on to compete in finals Thursday at a time and location that will be later determined.
Others who made the cut include: Robbie Bratten at 615, Matt Orum at 609, Coda Hatfield at 600, Dion Arlyn at 594, and Avery Jenkins and Jeremy Koling were tied at 582.
Gurthie said his drive style and run-up changes little from his normal heaves except for an extra hop before he releases. He said others my try to do a 360- degree type hurl release, but that’s never worked for him. Gurthie, who has been playing since age 3, uses new light weight Pro Destroyers, which he said are easier to control than beat up discs.

Monday Qualifying at USDGC - WOW!

USDGC hosted by Innova - Qualifiers: Gregg Barsby 63, Will Schusterick 65, David Tucker 65, Henry Childres 67, John Murphy 67.
John Murphy of Levittown, PA was waiting on the 17th tee with his caddy. They needed to find someone to observe his score on the final two holes to make his qualifying round official. Everyone in his original group had either bailed completely or had returned to HQ for another try by then. The caddy asked if I would join them. At this point John was at +1 for the round. Last they heard, even par by Tim Barr was on the bubble to qualify. Murphy's drive barely clears the hay bales safe about 25 feet away from the pin. He makes a great putt for two and now lies even with the treacherous hole 18 remaining.
Hole 18 plays tough enough in good weather. But with the cool, unending drizzle all day, the left sloping fairway played that much slicker, especially for the righties who don't have a reliable 300 ft forehand. They have to throw that far and have the disc settle down quickly and not skip OB off to the left. John played it perfectly with the disc thrown up to the right nice and flat. Then, with a slight fade left, it settled down with a slow ending curl, sparking a quick shot of aderenaline as we watched, before it appeared to settle safely in the fairway.

John's 67 placed him in the top five with several hours and several more players striving to reach 67 or better. The top dog still out there was Gregg Barsby who had won the Masters Cup back in May but not paid his entry fee in time and had to qualify. Gregg had a few bogeys out there along the way increasing the stress. but a few birds later and he came in with a solid 5 down 63 to top the qualifiers as many had expected. That still kept John in the top five, tied with one other for the fourth and fifth spots.
Watching from the clubhouse, it was hard to sense the tension on the course as the players worked hard to play their best and qualify. Early in the afternoon, I was watching around holes 8 and 9. In most cases, players bailed to take another try by the time they completed hole 7, since it's a longer walk after you head to play the 8 thru 14 loop. However, that's where more of the tough holes are located that can blow up a round. I watched a blow up on hole 9 where Bryan Motley and Mark Muren decided it was time for a do-over.
Several players were seeing the USDGC course for the first time and had no idea how tough it is to play it well, even after playing it several times. You could tell from watching the body language of the players on the 18th if they were coming in with a good round. One player played short and safe on the tee shot. You figured he was playing for a "safe" 4 if there is such a thing here. His second shot was safe on the high side, far enough to make a safe upshot for a potential drop-in 4 but not in range for a hero putt birdie 3. Not sure, but I suspect he snagged a 67 putting him into a tie for that last spot.
David Tucker rated 917 came in with perhaps the round of his life with a 65 to secure a spot late in the day. Four players - Zac Newhouse, Henry Childres, John Murphy and Chris Eads - had 67s forcing a playoff for two spots. Murphy and Childres birdie the tough 17 to win the two spots. So for John Murphy, it really was as "easy" as 1-2-3 on 18, but with the added spice of a playoff.

I saw Dave Mason a couple of years back at Blue Ash and he put on one heckuva performance. Did some new stuff but a lot of his old stuff and Traffic.

There is a $3 non-member fee for all non-GCFDA members (Novice Men & Am Women are exempt from the non-member fee), and a $5 late fee for sign-ups after 9:00am. There is also an optional $2 ace fund. If no aces are hit that day, a CTP will be run for half the fund and the other half will be carried over to the next tournament.

The tournaments consist of two rounds with approximately one hour for lunch in between rounds.

Cash is awarded to Open/Master/Grandmaster divisions. All other divisions receive credit towards discs and miscellaneous equipment sold after the awards are finished. A pre-made chart is used to calculate the payout.

The course challenge standings are based on a player's finishes in the course challenges throughout the calendar year. Started in 2000, player's points are based upon the place that they finished in their division. For example, 1st place gets one point, fifth get five, tenth gets ten, etc. Players that did not play in a particular course challenge are awarded points equal to the maximum turnout of players in their division plus one over all course challenges in a year. This weights all tournaments the same No one is penalized more for missing one tournament over another. For example, In Advanced 24 people play Mt Airy, 10 play Pride, someone who misses Mt Airy gets 25 points, someone who misses Pride gets 25 points (2003). The two worst point totals of the year (out of the nine course challenges) are dropped from the total points for every player. The other course challenge points are tallied together to form a total score. The player with the lowest total score is the course challenge series champion in that division. (The system is roughly based on the cross country point system).

Disc golf is booming and so is the knowledge. The PDGA is looking towards the future and sees an opportunity to move closer to our goal of global-recognition. With an already impressive member base of over 41,000, we recognize the need to market how many people, in addition to our members, are competing. Our hope is that this more accurate number will attract major corporate sponsors and bring disc golf into the eyes of the media.
We have created a new system to track these competitors, known as Supporting Members. Previously it was the sole responsibility of the Tournament Directors to gather all non-member contact information at their event. Unfortunately, this data was not always complete and/or accurate. Now, TDs will simply hand out a card (available through TD packages) to each non-member who competes in the event and pays the $10 non-member fee. This card will explain how to sign up for a Supporting Membership.
As a thank you for competing in a PDGA sanctioned event and registering as a Supporting Member, we will send them a personalized mini marker disc and PDGA rulebook as well as assign a lifetime membership number. These competitors will continue to pay the $10 non member fee at all sanctioned events and not be able to participate in SuperTour or Majors until they decide to become a FULL member. These Supporting Members will show up at PDGA.com and on a Tournament Director's weekly member list as non-current members. However we will continue to track our Supporting Members and update their stats for when they do decide to join. This will also help determine which divisions these Supporting Members should participate in based on the skill level, age, and gender. In addition, Supporting Members will be given the opportunity to upgrade to a FULL membership at a discounted rate ($10 off).

Jesper Lundmark wins European Open

“Finn-ish” 1-2 at the European Open
Team Latitude’s Jesper Lundmark and 3 time reigning World Champ Val Jenkins both overcame early deficits to win the PDGA Major Titles in Tampere Finland today. For Jesper it marked the 2nd straight year he beat USA’s finest players at the PDGA EuroMajor. In the process Latitude 64, whose discs Jesper recently switched to, became the 3rd manufacturer to have a team player win a Major event.

Val quickly fell from tied for the overnight lead to 5 back of teammate Carrie Berlogar when she missed the hay bales twice on 1 and then doubled hole 2. However, after Burl took a 7 on hole 3 for the 2nd time in 3 days, and then doubled hole 6, Val regained a share of the lead with a 30’ birdie putt on 11. When she birdied 12 the lead was hers to stay and she won by 1, matching Burl’s birdie on 18 to secure the title. Finland’s Anne Matilainen finished 3 off the pace in 3rd, and Sweden’s Anki Frantz secured last cash with the ladies’ best score of the day by 4, a 1 under 59.

In the Open division the crowd of 400-500 was expecting a battle royale and for a while it looked like the lead would see-saw back and forth between Jesper, 4 time Major winner Dave Feldberg, and the “Champ,” Ken Climo. On hole 1, Jesper was forced to re-tee after his opening throw skipped out long, giving Feldberg an early 2 shot advantage. However on 2, Dave’s approach slid OB long by less than a metre, and his 21’ putt to save par was always low. When “Borg” bogeyed 3 with 2 more OB shots, and Kenny and Jesper hit 33’ and 39’ birdie putts respectively they briefly became joint leaders. Only KC missed 4 to slip into a tie with Dave at 1 back, following which Jesper seized control with the lone birdies on the tough 117m/384’ #5 from 29’ and the even tougher 137m/449’ #6 where his Blitz came to rest just outside the circle and he banged the putt dead center.

Feldberg’s head and day were basically done after he missed #s 10 & 11. Kenny was only 2 off Jesper’s pace coming into the water hole #13. But his tee-shot there was always low, and while his disc appeared to have barely made the bank, it settled OB wet. Jesper then stepped up and drilled his drive to within 20’ to seal the deal. He would finish with a 10 down 50 and a -38 total, good enough for a 5 shot victory and an €2500/$3589 payday.
The best round of the day belonged to the 10 time Finnish Champ, Timo Pursio. His sensational, bogey-free 49 vaulted him from top of the 2nd card into a tie with KC and a share of 2nd place. Feldberg hung onto 4th but just barely.
Completing the day’s final group and coming in 5th was the teenage sensation, Simon Lizotte. Almost predictably his most pressure filled round in disc golf to date started off unsteadily. After 6 holes he was 2 over par and 10 strokes off the lead. But unlike Dave, the kid kept his cool and, as a result, his luck. On hole 12 Simon’s poorly executed approach was well wide of the gap but managed to miss enough trees to make it to within 45’ from where his putter was money. All told Simon birdied 9 of the last 11, including a tournament best -7 on the back 9. He got up and down from almost 400’ on #16 after a shaky drive, banging in a fearless, dead straight 56 putt with OB lurking behind the bucket. Simon’s future is nothing but bright.

Round 2 "fin"ished at the European Open

Well, round 2 is now "fin"ished at Tampere, Finland and Jesper Lundmark has a 2 stroke lead over Dave Feldberg and Anders Sward. Climo is 5 strokes back, with Avery 10 and Nate 11 strokes off the pace.

Carrie Berlogar has increased her lead over Anne Mattilainen to 4 and 5 over Val Jenkins. Birgitta is 9 strokes back and yes, I like to say Birgitta!

Well, I'm not sure what time it is in Finland, but the first round of the European Open is over and Jesper Lundmark and Dave Feldberg share the lead at -9/51. Looks like a pretty close tourney right now. Climo is 3 back tied for 8th place. Nate is seven off the pace right now in 26th. Carrie Berlogar has a 3 stroke lead over Val Jenkins and Anne Matilainen in the Women's division, with Birgitta in fourth.

Banklick Doubles 8/26

Another really good crowd came out to the Wed. Doubles at Banklick at Lincoln Ridge last evening. Liz Shooner got the Ace Pot $ - not sure how much was in it. It's been hit now I think about 3 weeks in a row. Liz aced hole 14. Way to go Liz!!

There were some really good teams that got paired up and Matt Blakely and Garrett Deimler came away with the win shooting a -20 for the 24 hole course. Jeff Eades and Jim Ferrara tied with myself and Colin Hurley at -17. Jeff and Jim won the throwoff for second. Derek ( I don't know his last name) was partnered with himself and shot -16 - good shooting Derek.

Jim Ferrara won the $10 CTP on hole 22.

Lots of fun on Wednesdays - the best weekly event in town - ok, I'm biased, but what the hell, I'm the one writing this, ok? Come on out to see for yourself.

We've played 24 holes the past couple of weeks and it's getting close some nights with the availablility of light, so next week will probably go to 20 or 22 holes. Hope to see you there.

Hosted by Jussi Meresmaa and Discmania in the beautiful Finnish city of Tampere, this event offers it all - terrific hospitality, top level competition in Epila park, and the camaraderie and thrills that reflect international disc golf at its finest.
The 2009 European Open will be contested on August 27-30 and will crown champions in two professional divisions, Open (MPO) and Women (FPO). The field is limited to 150 players. 26.08.2009 - Team USA takes home the President’s Cup again. Third time was not the charm for Team Europe despite many hoping for a change in reign of the President’s Cup this year. Team USA was again victorious and will take the Cup back home – this time with a stunning score of 27.5 against Europe’s 4.5. Team Captains David Feldberg (USA) and Hasse Tegebäck (Europe) agreed that the strength of the American players lies in their professionalism. Team USA played a solid round of 18 holes, whereas European players did not perform on their usual level. In 2010, Team USA will for the first time defend the President’s Cup on home ground, as the competition will be held in connection with the U.S. Disc Golf Championships. Players are excited to see the competition on a new continent, and Jussi Meresmaa is proud to export this part of Finnish and European disc golf culture to the most prestigious tournament in the world. European Open broke records during the President’s Cup, as the competition - despite the grey weather - was witnessed by the largest crowd ever in the history of the Cup.

The European Open 2009 will continue on Thursday with the first round starting at 9:00 AM.

The European Open is preceeded by the President's Cup on August 26th, a team stroke and match play competition between Europe's and USA's top players for the purse, the champagne, and trans-Atlantic bragging rights. Lighting it up in Pittsburgh!

Well, we sure had some good finishes by Disc 'n Dat team members Matt Blakely and Liz Shooner at the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open this past weekend. Matt finished 10th and Liz finished 3rd. Liz was right behind Val Jenkins and Elaine King - pretty good company you're keeping there girl.

Ohio definitely took home some cash and prizes in this event: Avery Jenkins took 1st in Open, Brad Schick 4th, Tyler Horne 5th, Blakely 10th, Gehrling 13th Singer 17th in Open Men.

Liz 3rd and Lisa Warner 5th in Open Women.

Kevin Stewart 4th, Jim Ferrara 7th, Dennis Janney 15th, Dan Busick 18th, Fred Salaz 20th and John Ferrensen 22nd in Pro Masters.

Congrats to Karen Farrell for her big win in Advanced Women!

And the Hollingsheads had a pretty good weekend it looks like: Dan Hollingshead took 2nd in Advanced with a playoff as they were tied after the Finals. Dave Hollingshead won Intermediate and Alex took 4th in the Advnaced Women.

2009 PDGA Disc Golf World Championships
The Professional Disc Golf Association would like to express our most sincere gratitude and thanks to the Kansas City Flying Disc Club for a most excellent 2009 PDGA Disc Golf World Championships. 934 players from 13 countries and 44 states attended the event making it the largest world championships in history. It was also stated by many of the competitors that this was also one of, if not the best, world championships in history. Tournament Directors Jack Lowe and John Chapman, along with Rick Rothstein and a bevvy of volunteers put on a show that will be tough to match for years to come and they should all be very proud of their accomplishments.

The 2009 World Championships will be remembered for years to come for having some of the tightest and most exciting races at the highest levels. Avery Jenkins and Josh Anthon put on a show for the ages with one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the world championships. The two warriors traded the lead back and forth throughout the final 9 ending up tied after regulation. An exciting five hole playoff ensued in front of a huge gallery of appreciative fans on the now famous Blue Valley course in Kansas City and it was Avery Jenkins coming out on top, and joining his sister Valarie as the first brother/sister duo to win world titles.

2009 PDGA Open Men and Women Champions: Avery and Valarie Jenkins (with proud parents Leroy and Sharon)
Valarie is no rookie to winning a World title. She stepped up her game to have a commanding lead going into the finals. Des Reading (2 X World Champion) took second followed by Nicole Frazer and Birgitta Lagerholm (1 X World Champion).
Avery Jenkins and Josh Anthon went into a sudden death playoff resulting from their pars received on the final 9th hole. After Avery’s last putt forcing a playoff, his words were, “Let’s Go!!” He was ready. Little did he know that he would have to stick it out 5 more holes in a playoff before he could officially claim his title. He came here to win. You could see it in his eyes. Josh forced some “should I lay-up or not” questions to float through Avery’s head. He definitely wasn’t going to just give Avery the Championship. If he wanted it, he had to earn it. Avery did just that.
What excitement! There were hundreds of spectators. The roars could be heard all over the course. Blue Valley is a long, uphill, downhill with a side of blind shots course. You have to have your game on to battle it out there and these two men sure did give us a great show. Congratulations to you both.
Matthew Orum, Mobile, AL placed a respectable 3rd followed by Cale Leiviska, St Paul, MN who placed 4th. The card changed leaders and 3rd and 4th place switched back and forth a few times. It was a very mentally challenging final round. Congratulations to you all.
History has been made: Largest PDGA World Championships, oldest (Olive Bolander, 82) and youngest (Ezra Hapner, 7) competitors and siblings winning Open Men and Women titles.

Matt Blackely Finishes in Top 25

Matt Blakely, Disc 'n Dat team member finishes 25th at the 2009 PDGA Pro Worlds. Way to go Matt. That's some pretty sweet play among the best disc golfers in the world. Congratulations to Matt and Liz for such a great showing at the Worlds this year.
