Super Class Discs and Tourneys
Super Class is a newly defined category of super-sized golf discs that may weigh up to 200 grams, have bigger rim heights more like catch discs, and a minimum diameter over an inch larger than our long distance drivers.
Photo shows the rims and size of a regular white hi-tech driver compared with an orange Zephyr at the smaller end of Super Class sizes and a white Ultra-Star at the larger end.

Throwback to the Future with Super Class - by Chuck Kennedy
OK, some of you have heard rumblings regarding the new option for PDGA sanctioned events coming in 2009 called Super Class. Super Class is a newly defined category of super-sized golf discs that may weigh up to 200 grams, have bigger rim heights more like catch discs, and a minimum diameter over an inch larger than our long distance drivers. Super Class will add something new to the existing mix of the almost 1000 disc golf events TDs have been sanctioning. In fact, PDGA members can earn a whole new Super Class rating separate from their regular PDGA rating.
Yes, it’s truly a throwback to the future. Super Class discs will initially be based on the larger diameter Frisbee® discs we’ve all played catch with, but molded in much heftier golf weights to work well in the wind and penetrate chain baskets. Presto! By throwing a variety of Super Class discs that don’t fly as far as typical golf discs, many of our shorter par 3 courses now turn into true golf challenges with everything from par 3s, 4s, 5s and even some 6s. Using Super Class discs, the winning balance tilts more toward touch and accuracy versus technology and power.

Giving Thanks
Well, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving day yesterday and were able to spend some good time with your families. I'd like to say "Thanks" to all the men and women in the armed services who are serving us and our country. I'm also thankful for my family, my friends, my health, having a job, home and a car, for customers at the store and online and just being alive and able to throw a disc. Have a great Thanksgiving weekend everyone.

Play at Night?
Ok, we've got the lights to tape on to the discs - those have made the regular glow discs obsolete now. Those are great and have allowed many more people to play glow golf more often. Now, we've got another option. Now first off many people are going to say "NO WAY" am I going to put a hole in my disc. But maybe you have an older one you don't mind putting a hole in or you want to set up just a flight of discs that you use specifically for night play and don't want to bother with lights and taping them on discs, etc. Well, here's the AeroPOD - great idea. As you can see we have this attached to an MRX - not a see-through disc and this baby shines great. The AeroPOD is attached to the bottom of the disc with four tiny screws, so no, you're not going to use this disc in a PDGA tournament. But just for recreation and for someone who wants to set up a flight of night discs this is a great way to go. So, if you and your friends want to play some night golf or you play on Wednesdays at Banklick, these might be for you.
Banklick Glow Doubles Ace Fund is going on now until the time changes on Wednesdays at 6 pm. - never cancelled. Cost is $7 and the format is draw doubles, best-shot. $2 of the entry goes to the Ace Fund which is usually around $200. The rest of the entry is paid out to the winning scores for that evening. Great way to meet other disc golfers and to keep playing throughout the year. Any questions, just contact me at Disc 'n Dat.

Voodoo Super Stupid Soft First Runs
Gateway has just released their new Voodoo putter in Super Stupid Soft plastic. We've got the First Runs - they are all black and 175g. Get them while they last. You know you want some Black Voodoo! Hmm...made me think and I know that's dangerous. But Gateway has the Magic, has the Voodoo, -maybe we can get them to make a Black Magic Woman. Have to talk to Dave about that one.
Gateway has also retooled the Element and has produced a new disc the Warrior (not to be confused with a previous disc they had for a short time called the Warrior) - this is a new midrange disc. Here's links to:

# Courses Played
Well, I had no idea how many courses I had played so I just went through the Course Directory and checked off the ones I had played and I came up t0 155 or so. There are some temporary courses I know I've played, like Mt. Echo, Rapid Run and then there's Pioneer Park that's not here any longer that I forgot about. Plus, I know I've played some on vacation that I just can't remember. Guess that's why it's good to keep a record, eh? So, all of you out there, keep a record of the courses you've played. Maybe you're close to 1000? That's definitely a lot of courses. I thought that I would be above a 100, but not sure how many. That was kind of fun remembering the courses and what went on when you played them. A little trip down disc golf memory fairway. I'd suggest you do it. It's fun.
National Tour (NT) Champions
David Feldberg and Valarie Jenkins are crowned champions of the 2008 PDGA National Tour Points Series, presented by Woodchuck Cider.

FYI: Some butterlies have fake heads on their butts to confuse hungry predators.
In some cultures feet are sexy. An archaic law in rural China prohibits any male from looking at the bare feet of another man's wife. Men are allowed to see anything else they want, even the woman's naked body. But according to the tradition, if a neighbor or relative steals a glance at a woman's toes, her husband is obligated to kill him.

Steve Wisecup Interview
Some of you might not know it, but Steve Wisecup is formerly from Dayton, Ohio, currently he and his wife Vicki are working for Innova in California, won the PDGA Worlds in 1989.
From 1000rated.com interview: When initially asked how he first started playing the game, Steve Wisecup replied, “To make a long story short and sweet, I thought we had invented it - but then around 1975 my friends and I discovered that other people were playing Disc Golf. When we bought our World Class Frisbees we found the IFA and then the DGA, and eventually the PDGA.” Over 30 years later, Steve Wisecup is one of those guys who can say, ‘been there - done that.’ He won the Ohio State Championships 13 times - holds a Disc Golf World Championship title from Waterloo, Iowa in 1989 - was two time player of the year - two time National Doubles Champion - was inducted into the Hall of Fame - holds the 2008 US Masters Title - over 100 PDGA wins - and has been working for Innova since 2002. Oh yeah, and he has a 1021 rating at age 53. Arguably a disc golf icon, Cup just seems happy to have been along for the ride. Read the entire interview at 1000rated.com Wisecup interview.
Steve Wisecup is one of my all-time favorite disc golfers. I love to watch him putt. Great putter, great guy. This is a really good interview and I highly suggest you read it.

2008 Players Cup Final Results
Eric McCabe wins the 2008 Players Cup by one throw over Barsby. In an intense finish, Eric McCabe of Kansas fended off the resurgent Gregg Barsby and Nikko Locastro for his first Major win. For the women, current World Champ Val Jenkins was a decisive winner. Complete results and final round photos. There's some really nice pics on here - a couple with a Red Hawk in the tree and one with a putter hanging in the chains are a couple of my favorites. Really nice to see someone other than the normal recent champs win a major. Congrats to Eric.

Players Cup 2008 Video
This is a video of the course and some players who are participating in this years tourney: Dave Feldberg, Avery Jenkins and Barry Schultz
All Jenkins Players Cup?
Could it be an all Jenkins Players Cup Championship? Well, after the first round it is. Some really hot scores: -11 for Avery and -2 for Valarie. Way to go Ohio. Avery's 1075 round puts him tied with Ken Climo for the fourth best rating for courses over 66 SSA. Valarie's round blows away the women's record shooting a 1018, with Juliana Korver's 1003's, both shot at Winthrop in 2001, now a distant second.
2009 Players Cup
So here's the first scoring update from the Players Cup. Who you rooting for? You got anybody you'd like to see win? I've got a few:
Kevin McCoy - don't know why, just do
Ken Climo - so he can have titles in the 3 Major Tourneys, Pro Worlds, USDGC and Players Cup and he is just amazing.
Nikko Locastro - so we can here a lot of fallout and bullshit from naysayers of Locastro
Matt Orum - I know his Dad Jim who's a really good guy
For the women:
Liz Lopez - she played in the Bluegrass Open and her name is Liz - reminds me of Shooner!
Ozark Mountain Disc Golf Course
Ozark Mountain Disc Golf Course Pictures
Well, this sounds like one heck of a course and in the Ozark mountains. Think this one would make a nice trip. I think I might have to put this one on my list to "must play". Not all that far away and just a great place to have a course. Don't think it's a permanent course, but sure is a nice one. Does it rival Idlewild?? Hmmm... me thinks so. Definitely like to play it to compare. Anyone out there played it?
Located in the foothills of Vichy, MO this 300 acre farm is one of the most beautiful pieces of property ever used for disc golf. Dave McCormack has transformed this property in to the most challenging, yet fair course on the planet. This is further confirmed by having the highest World Class Par as published by the Professional Disc Golf Association. The Ozarks is a 10,000' par 70 that has creeks and ponds, huge elevation changes, open and tight shots, and long and short holes. You better bring your best game.

Wake up to find a roach sucking on your tear duct for mosture
or
find two rats having sex on your stomach?
Now for those nice FYI's:
About 20% of all adults in the U.S. have had a cockroach crawl into their inner ear canal. They enter while you sleep!
Pregnant female rats give birth to litters that range from six to twenty-two babies. Those babies then begin breeding when they reach four months of age.
Groove Update
From Dave Dunipace: The groove in the Groove is similar to the notch in the Monarch. Testing is still going on. The Groove is not like the Monarch. It seems to be just a driver rather than a driver/roller like the Monarch. My big arm testers couldn't roll any farther than they could air, however they could air it quite far. I see it as a complement to a Boss or Destroyer that flies fairly straight when thrown on a slight hyzer. Upwind requires more hyzer. Nose angles are critical to accuracy. This disc won't be available until next year.

Groove is in the Air
Well, a new disc in the wings for us. Here's the info I have right now. 08-11-20 - Groove is in the air. A new driver from Rancho Cucamonga, California will be airborne soon, the Groove is a speed 13 slightly turning power driver. It is aimed at less powerful throwers as a complement to the Boss with a straighter flight and in lower weight, it goes down to 164 grams in Champion material. Preliminary figures for the flight rating are; Speed=13, glide=5, HSS=0-2 and LSS=2. The Groove in Champion plastic is scheduled to be run during December, to be released early in 2009. It will probably appear as a fundraiser in Star plastic first. I'll post more when I hear it.
Would you like to live here?
Or do you? Just heard today that there is a 6-hole private course at Manor Hill in Independence, Ky. The Homeowners there approved putting in 6 holes. They have different tee boxes for the holes so they can have 18 holes. Just goes to show you this sport is growing. I think that is pretty damn cool. I was amazed when this guy comes in to look at our ceiling at the store and then says he wants to look at the golf discs 'cause he's got a golf course where he lives - and then he proceeded to tell me it was right "where" he lives. That's great. Anybody out there ever seen or played it?
New Poll - How many courses have you played?
Well, sonce we had the milestone of 1000 courses played this week by Gregg Hosfeld and Ben Calhoun, I thought it would be a good poll to see how many courses you've played. For some us, we may need to really do some remembering - pretty tough for some of us. Anyway, I think it will be good to see how many courses some of us in this area have played. I know quite a few people who play in lots of tournaments and then I know a bunch of people who just travel during the summer to different courses. Let us know of any significant events you do with your buds and whoever. I've heard of a few really nice trips that people take. I know Paul Dnu takes some nice trips to different courses. So come on people, this is a good place to share some of your course excursions with us - weekend trips, vacations, funny stuff, sad stuff that's ok now, you name it.
Well, this weeks poll is over and the Buzzz has stung the wings off the Roc! 15 0f 18 people carry a Buzzz while in the previous poll 3 of 14 people carry a Roc. Like I said before, looks like the changing of the guard - Buzzz now baby! So, what do people like about the Buzzz? Anyone want to share?
From Discraft's site: More players agree: Buzzz™ is the best golf disc you can buy, period. It's an ultra-dependable, straight flying midrange that you'll reach for again and again. Throw it hard and versatile Buzzz™ will hold any line you put it on. Discraft's 30-year reputation for consistency means that if you lose it, just pull out a new one and you're back in business.Available models: Pro D Buzzz, Elite X Buzzz, Z-Buzzz, ESP Buzzz and FLX Buzzz. Stability: 0.5 Max weight: 178 g
"A must in the bag for me." -Matthew Blakely
"One of the greatest discs ever made!" -Brad Schick
"The most versatile disc in my bag." -Liz Carr

Be known for your bad habit of sniffing people's armpits whenver you greet them
or
be known for scooping after your dog with your bare hands instead of using a pooper scooper?
Remember, you have to choose one. FYI - At the Odor Clinic in Boston, deodorants are tested by heating up humans and then having other humans smell their armpits. "The job isn't so bad...most of the time. You might hear an occasional 'Whoa!'" admits Brian Rogers, who works in the company's Toiletries Technology Lab. Who's ready to sign up??
The Players Cup
The Players Cup is ready to begin tomorrow. From the Players Cup website: A Disc Golf Championship Unlike Any Other... There are top level disc golf championships, but none offer the experiences you'll find at the Players Cup. Shoot against the best players in the world on a pristine championship course. Stay at a luxury resort. Commune with manatees and other exotic wildlife. Try scuba, go boating. Bring your family, Orlando is near. You'll make memories to last a lifetime when you immerse yourself in Florida's amazing Gulf Coast in late November...
Here's a link to the Resgistered Players List and round one teetimes.
The Red Hawk is a permanent disc golf course that sits alongside and amidst a pampered ball golf course at Florida's luxurious Plantation Inn. You'll find plenty of water (and gators, so think twice about going after an errant drive), palm trees, manicured fairways, and punishing shule.
I'll try to update here with scores, etc.

Update on New Concept for Tournaments
From Craig Gangloff (pdga message board)who TD'd this tournemant: "I think what I learned is that the sliding scale does a couple things.1) It reduces your expectation of what 1st place cash should be for a field of 65 players. It’s not a bad thing – just different – 1st place was a little over $500. A couple ways to deal with this – change the scale to make the bottom ceiling a little higher (maybe $60 for a 2 day event instead of $40), increase the ratings windows as CK suggested above …………or raise more added cash!! (Always a difficult task) or some combination of those.2) It met my expectations for a nice even distribution. 15th place got over $100.3) It met my expectations for equity across what would otherwise be separate divisions – of 31 players who cashed, 11 were masters aged players, 10 were what the PDGA would say qualify for MA1 (under 970).4) I think overall there was good value offered for a fair price for all players (of course mine might be a biased opinion – so I am interested in how others feel)I have yet to get much feedback from the survey I put in the program (Saturday’s rain storm probably trashed most of the programs) – but I am hopeful I will get some meaningful responses still. One more note of interest. We had nine players in the MGM division. Only one would have cashed in the MPO division and he was rated 974 – and would have tied the one MGM player who did play in the MPO division. This to me validates the over 50 split for divisional play (at least to what I would consider a reasonable degree). " For more on the results and discussion.
1K Course Milestone!
Well the day finally arrived and no one felt the excitement more than Ben Calhoun and Gregg Hosfeld as they readied themselves to complete their 1,000th course together. The weather could not be prettier. Without a cloud in sight, one can only assume the air was forecasting the flight of the discs. Ben arrived at the International Disc Golf Center several days earlier with a constant smile on his face and faithfulness to Gregg as he refrained from playing the newly installed Jim Warner Memorial Course. The soles of his shoes are a bit thinner; however, as he has been pacing with anticipation for Gregg to arrive. Here's the rest of the story from the PDGA website: 1K Course Milestone - a fun read. Anybody out there close to 1000? How many have you played?
Zobmondo!! - Would You Rather...?
Ok, I'm going to start giving you a fun question. I will do them daily or every few days if I can. No, it's not about disc golf. It's just a fun thing that I used to start some of my team meetings with. They come from Zobmondo, a book one of my staff left me when he moved to St. Louis. I think they are really fun to think about and crazy. You have to choose one - you can't say I won't do either - you have to choose one! You can explain your answer if you'd like.
So, today's question is: Would you rather... Have frequent spurts of uncontrollable drooling or be a bedwetter?
FYI - Chewing cinnamon bark for a day is a common folk remedy for curing bedwetting.
Hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

FRISBEE PHYSICS How does physics play a role in Frisbee flying?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
* How does a Frisbee fly?
* Why is a Frisbee shaped the way it is?
* What would it be like to compete in a world championship Frisbee competition?
* How fast and how far can a Frisbee go?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Discussion
In the late 1940s Fred Morrison performed some experiments with flying discs. Some of the discs he experimented with were made out of metal while others were formed out of a new material called plastic. In 1955 the Wham-O Company purchased the rights and molds from Morrison. It wasn't until the early 1960s when Frisbees became the rage. Whamo-O's former General Manager Ed Headrick provided the organization and groundwork for the growth of the Frisbee craze. Today organized competitions take place each year around the world culminating in the World Frisbee Competition in California.

Disc Golf Course Directory
Do you travel a lot? Going on vacation? Like to just take a weekend tript to play new courses? Well, you need to know where the courses are, directions, etc. Here's an online link to the PDGA Course Directory. If you do a lot of traveling and/or want to have a course directory with you at all times and don't have a Blackberry, etc. or you just like a hard copy to have with you then I would suggest the Spiral Bound PDGA Course Directory I like the hard copy because I can always have it in the car and when I'm traveling I can look at the map on the state course page and see if there are any courses close to my driving route. It also helps because there are phone numbers of contacts for each course. The course directory gives you directions, general description of the course, how many holes/baskets, what type of baskets, what type of tees, distance of the course and holes, contacts, etc. Gotta know where the courses are! This makes a great present for any disc golfer.
Dave Dunipace - Grips for Disc Golf
Here's some information on disc golf grips.
Grips used for Disc Golf by Dave Dunipace of Innova Disc Golf:
There are many variations of grips used for Disc Golf. Driving grips are used to grasp the disc securely to create maximum rip. Putting and approach grips have less grip strength but provide more accuracy or “touch”. The strength from driving grips comes from pressing the rim of the disc into the crease of the palm at the base of the thumb. This is different from putting and approach grips, which pinch the disc between the thumb pad and fingers. Here you will find photos and brief information about:
Destination Disc Golf Adventure by Cliff Towne has Idlewild on the list and Idlewild is the picture used for the article - you might want to check this article out. It's pretty good - "The checklist for a Disc Golf Adventure (based on my limited experience) might include: some good friends, willing spouses and families, and a weekend plus an extra day. Pick a locale, an adventure course (some are listed here) and a few other courses in the area, print course maps if they are available online, check with the course contacts (many of these courses are private and/or seasonal - details are up at the Course Directory at PDGA.com), then GO! Good luck!"

Interesting New Concept for Tournaments

980-999 = $80
960-979 = $70
940-959 = $60
920-939 = $50
919 and under = $40
MPG (Men over 50) = $60
FPO (Ladies) = $50
TD Craig Gangloff has come up with one of the most novel ideas in ages - a sliding entry fee for Open division players based on player rating. Personally, I hope this format catches on because "mullet" pros with little chance at cashing then don't feel like they're donating large sums of money, and it also encourages up and coming amateur players to try out the Pro ranks at a discounted price. Way to go Craigger! "

'09 Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open - just a reminder so people can get this on their schedule and let you know it is NOT Mother's Day weekend. Hopefully the PDGA schedule will get change shortly. Until then, I will probably keep bumping this for awhile.
Vote for Jim Hilvert Coach of the Year Thomas More College
You may have noticed the Vote for Jim Hilvert gadget to the right here. Jim Hilvert is the Coach of the Thomas More College Saints football team. They are a Division III team and are very exciting and explosive. Thomas More College head football coach Jim Hilvert is on the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year ballot. It is the only coach of the year award where fans can have a vote.
Coach Hilvert is 11-8 (.579) in his second season as head coach at Thomas More. In just his second season at the helm of the Saints he guided Thomas More to a perfect 6-0 record in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and won the school’s first-ever PAC title in a men’s sport and earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
To vote for Coach Hilvert you can either text, JHilvert to 20250 or go online at http://www.coachoftheyear.com/. You can vote daily until the voting ends on December 6th. More than just a trophy, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award provides each winning coach with $50,000 to donate to one or more charitable organizations of his choice and a $20,000 grant to donate to his school’s alumni association to enhance student scholarships and activities. As of today (Wednesday, November 12), Coach Hilvert is 11th in the Division National Coach of the Year voting. I think it would be sweet to have a local coach win something like that and the community wins too.
The Thomas More College football team looks to close out the 2008 regular season at 8-2 as it hosts across-the River rival, the College of Mount St. Joseph in Bridge Bowl XIII on Saturday (November 15, 2008) at The Bank of Kentucky Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Roc Poll Is Closed
Well, times have really changed. There was a time around here that if you didn't have a Roc in your bag, you didn't have a bag. I must say I was somewhat surprised at how low the number was that carried a Roc. I had a feeling that it wouldn't be an overwhelming number but I did think it would be more. So, what are people throwing? One thing I think - a lot of people have switched to the Buzzz by Discraft. Also, there are so many new people playing and there are so many different midrange discs out there that the Roc just isn't the only "really good" midrange out there. So I think my next poll is going to be "Do you carry a Buzzz in your bag?" I am really intrigued to see what that number is. I should have that poll up shortly. Thanks for all those that voted. The picture is one of my favorite custom stamps ever and I really liked it on Rocs - black stamp on a white disc - wow, I'm just about to... that's one sweet disc, gotta stop, see you later.
Roc Poll To End Soon
This week's poll is soon to end. Get your vote in while you can. I've got an idea for the next one already.
International Disc Golf Center
The IDGC Clubhouse at Wildwood Park in Augusta, Georgia has now been completed and the staff has moved into the facility. Here's a link to the IDGC at the PDGA website. Here's a link to some pictures of the inside of the IDGC I know a couple of people who have traveled down and visited. What they say is that it is definitely worth it and the courses are really nice. If anyone else has some words to share, please do so. I'd like to hear more from people who have been there.
'09 Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open
The date is set for the 2009 Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open - June 6-7, 2009. Currently, the date on the PDGA Schedule states May 9-10, but that has been changed. I made a mistake initially and had it scheduled for that weekend but that is Mother's Day Weekend and I think we might have a few unhappy disc golfers, if not family members. This is the 10th Anniversary of the tournament so we will be making a big effort to make this bigger and better for those who attend. We will get some more information out shortly about the format, registration and other stuff. I am currently looking for designs to use for this years tournament, both for some early fundraising discs and for the tournament discs and merchandise. So, anyone who wants to submit something get them to me. I'd like to have a Fundraising Disc by the first of the year, if not sooner. Also, anyone who has thoughts about potential sponsors or who has connections to a potential sponsor let us know.

Blakely Update on Players Cup
"Fun course, good amount of length and boy does the length help you at this course. I'm not getting to go this year, due to work. The course is pretty much open, It's got a few gaps though that you got to hit, and a few water shots that you have to throw over. All in all a good course, just length plays a big part. You will not see the smaller arms do as well at this tournament in general."
Thanks for that review Matt. Too bad you can't compete this year. I understand the work thing though, for sure.

New Colors for Innova Competition Bags
Yep, got some bright new colors for you on those Innova Cometition Bags - Bright Yellow/Gun Metal and Pink/Gun Metal to go along with the colors of Blue/Gun Metal, Red/Gun Metal, Black/Gun Metal, Green/Khaki and Orange/Khaki that we already had. I'm pretty sure Keith would like the pink one to go along with all those pink discs. What do you say Keith?
