Masters Cup this weekend at DeLaveaga

Here's a preview of the Masters Cup being played this weekend at one of the most famous disc golf courses of all time. This comes from the PDGA website:

The PDGA National Tour makes its annual stop at the world famous DeLaveaga Disc Golf Course on May 15-17, but this year the buzz surrounding the "Steady Ed" Memorial Masters Cup is about more than the legendary course near the Pacific Ocean. The field features extremely strong competition in all divisions. Consider the following:
* 28 players registered for the event have player ratings of 1000 or higher, and 12 more are rated 990 or higher
* Nine current or past world champions will be competing, with at least one in each division
* 11 of the top 16 top-rated players in the U.S. are playing the Masters Cup, with nearly all of the sport's "young guns" in Santa Cruz trying to beat not only each other but the course
* The competition in the Women's division is even tougher, if that's possilbe. It includes 16 players, including the four highest-rated players in the world.
* A highly competitive Grandmaster's division of 28 players aims to prove that at DeLaveaga veteran savvy counts for more than at most other venues.
* Players from 17 different states are traveling from as far away as Massachusetts, despite the fact that DeLaveaga is all the way on the West Coast. Many are touring pros heading west to prove they deserve to be considered among the world's best. But among the 162 registered participants, there are plenty more that simply feel the need to test their skills against a course that requires every shot in their bags, and every shred of mental focus in their heads. For those that view the course as the main adversary at the Masters Cup, The DeLaveaga Disc Golf Club has been hard at work to make sure they aren't disappointed.
Since last year's Masters Cup, the club has made several course improvements and modifications. For instance, the teepads on holes 2 and 26 (both uphill) have been reinforced to deal with erosion issues, hole 23 has a new tee pad and a new basket location, and Hole 25 has a new pin placement that is longer and further uphill than the previous 'long' position. Hole 26a now has a permanent concrete pad that makes the hole longer, and the basket for Hole 27, aka 'Top of the World', is now a little tougher to reach. Another change - even though it has nothing to do with the course itself, is the new paved parking lot. For players that have braved the previous dirt lot, this will be a welcome upgrade.
All things considered, the 2009 edition of this venerable tournament - now in its 24th year - promises to be one for the ages. Will Nate Doss finally win the NT event that takes place on the course he's played since his childhood? How many players will break par on an even longer, tougher DeLaveaga? Stay tuned to find out.
The course is open to spectators and Wednesday will feature a $2000 women’s skins match between reigning World Champion Val Jenkins, three-time World Champion Des Reading, as well as local champion Carrie Berlogar. The National Touring “World Class Clinic” will follow withJay Reading hosting disc golf’s top players from 4-6:00 pm. Players of all skill levels are invited to learn from reigning World Champion David Feldberg, local phenom Josh Anthon, as well as elite players Gregg Barsby and Don Smith. Participation is free and includes eligibility to win a disc golf traveling basket.

Inquiring Roc' ers want to know

What is the difference between a San Marino, Ontario and Rancho Roc?

The Roc is one of disc golf's all-time leading discs that is or has been thrown by disc golfers. It is coveted by many, young and old. The Roc has become one of the all-time leading collector discs and is the big Fundraiser disc for the USDGC. On the PDGA Discussion Board someone asked this question, which I'm sure many of you, as I have asked and here's Dave Dunipace's reply:

The Ontario Roc is the most different of the three and the straightest flyer. In DX it will beat up most easily to perform turnover shots.

The San Marino is much more high speed stable than the Ontario and takes longer to beat in. It also is more low speed over stable, and has about the same glide.

The Rancho is the most over stable of the three, and generally the flattest, which tends to make it the best into a headwind, though the San Marino is still pretty good at that. The Ontario is not for headwinds.

Gateway Demon in Evolution Plastic

You asked for it and it's here - an overstable pig that is not made by Innova, or Discraft for that matter, but they don't have a pig, but I drone on. So, Gateway has produced a limited number of their overstable midrange, the Demon, in Evolution plastic. These are gummy and will be a demon for you on the course. Wind - what wind?

College Ultimate Championships

College Ultimate Championships: May 22-25Columbus, OH - The stage is now set for the 2009 UPA College Ultimate Championships! What began with over 11,000 student athletes on more than 650 college teams has been winnowed down to 20 Open teams -- led by top seed Carleton College -- and the 20 best Women's teams, where California Santa-Barbara enjoys the top seed. Good luck to all as you gear up for the big dance!

World's Biggest Weekend

World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend at Lincoln RidgeMay 2, 2009

In May of each year, Kenton County Parks & Recreation presents a local one-day "introduction to the sport" event at Lincoln Ridge Park (formerly Banklick Woods) as part of the international World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend. The WBDGW at Lincoln Ridge will be held on Saturday, May 2. The fun begins at 12:00 pm. (A rain date of Sunday, May 3 has been set ~ just in case!) The World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend will be held on over 200 courses across the country and abroad.

Nearly 100 new players participate at Lincoln Ridge each year. What is Disc Golf? Disc Golf is like (ball) Golf but played with a Frisbee or other brand of flying disc. Disc Golf is a game you can easily learn ~ no matter your age or physical condition ~ so you will have fun right away! It is free to play (no greens fees) and you can play nearly any day of the year ~ even in snow! And it is not just for teens and tweens ~ it's all ages that are playing Disc Golf. It's good exercise and it's fun!

Want to learn how to play? Here is your chance! There will be free demonstrations of the many types of "throws", including the Drive, the Approach, and the Putt. There will be CTP (Closest to the Pin) Contests, Putting Contests, and even Mini Disc Contests. We'll begin brand new learning sessions and contests at noon and again at 2:00 pm! Don't worry if you've never tried Disc Golf or if the last time you threw a Frisbee®, it ended up on the roof! Here's your chance to learn from some of the best Professional and Amateur players in Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati. They will be on hand to "Show and Tell".

Learn how to make the different types of throws ~ backhand, forehand, tomahawk, scoobie, and roller! Learn how to increase distance on your Drive and improve your accuracy. Experiment with different styles of putts and when to use them. Learn the basics of playing Disc Golf, including basic rules of play and course etiquette. The whole day will be dedicated to introducing new players to the game so bring your friends!

Lincoln Ridge Park is easy to find! The address is 420 Independence Station Rd., Independence. From I-75, take the Florence/Union exit. Go east to the 2nd stop light at Industrial Road. Turn right and go to 1303/Turkeyfoot Road. Turn right and go one-half mile to Independence Station Road (just past the Food Mart). Turn left and go two miles to the park. The park will be on your left. We'll be set up in Shelterhouse 1. Or, from I-275, take the Turkeyfoot Road exit and go south about six miles to Independence Station Road. Turn left and go two miles to the park.
